Ocular surface disease is a debilitating condition that causes chronic ocular discomfort and impaired vision. It occurs at a higher rate in patients receiving treatment for glaucoma and undermines one of the primary treatment objectives in glaucoma management – to maximise quality of life.

Our Orthoptist Team Leader Carly James and Dr Colin Clement discuss the major risk factors for developing ocular surface disease and explain why minimally invasive glaucoma surgery may be an optimal approach to treatment.

Eye Associates is delighted to welcome Dr Cheryl Au to our team. Dr Au will be joining Prof Mark Gillies, Dr Adrian Hunt and Dr Anagha Vaze in providing our Medical Retina service.

Dr Au specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions and other macular and retinal conditions.

Dr Au underwent specialist ophthalmology training in the Sydney Eye Hospital Network where she attained experience in both general ophthalmology and various subspecialties. She is an experienced cataract surgeon and has supervised cataract surgery as the Professorial Senior Registrar and as an accredited EyeSi supervisor. She completed her Medical Retina fellowship at Westmead Hospital under the supervision of Professor Paul Mitchell.

Dr Au completed a Bachelor of Medical Science, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (Honours I) and Master of Public Health at the University of Sydney. She was awarded the University of Sydney Undergraduate Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement and was placed on the Dean’s Honour list for Excellence in Academic Performance. She also received the Dr H G Chapman Prize and the Dr Charlotte Last Memorial Scholarship for her Honours thesis, and completed a Diploma in Primary Care Ophthalmology at the University of Edinburgh.

We are also pleased to be joined by Dr Elisa Cornish who will be covering for Prof Gillies for the next few weeks. Dr Cornish completed her advanced training at Sydney Eye Hospital before undertaking her Fellowship in Medical Retina with Prof Gillies.

Eye Associates is a dedicated, professional and caring team of orthoptists, receptionists, administrative and clinical trial staff, supporting our ophthalmologists.

Our doctors range of Subspecialities ensures that our patients receive extensive and comprehensive care throughout their consultations and follow up care within the same facility.

Eye Associates manages and participates in numerous national and international clinical trials. These include new eye drops, devices that diagnose eye conditions, and trials that look at risk factors that could contribute to common eye conditions.

Eye Associates is situated opposite Parliament House, between Hunter Street and Martin Place. Our practice occupies the entire 4th floor of Park House at 187 Macquarie Street, Sydney, and consists of 8 fully equipped consulting rooms, 4 orthoptic rooms and a treatment room for minor procedures.
