On Friday we enjoyed a Halloween dress up and activities day 👻🎃

Thank you to all classes for making a FA-BOO-LOUS effort to decorate classroom doorways and create interactive sensory experiences for trick or treaters. It was a fun opportunity for learners to engage with all areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum for students with vision impairment.

Last Friday we held our Junior Assembly!

During assembly Principal Karen announced that our new Outdoor Learning Space is planned to be completed and open for student learning in the coming weeks🥳

Classes had so much to show us during sharing and celebrations time! Triangle room shared a mini movie titled, ‘Can we make a sound?’. They’ve been creating it as part of their Science unit. The video showed Triangle learners using their hands and feet to make sounds with a variety of materials. They used their feet to make sounds with pebbles, drums and chimes and used their hands to make sounds with beads, chimes and both wooden and metal chain. Heart room shared a story they recorded using sound effects for the Media Arts unit. In the story we could hear Noel’s voice singing and Rayson using his talker. Square room also shared a project from their Media Arts unit. It was a recording of learners using the class iPad to play the sound of different instruments. We heard Leo play the rock organ, Raheel play the guitar and piano and Dut play the bell synthesizer.

Junior Years learners received awards for making requests and sharing opinions using PODD, actively participating in all classroom activities, grasping a long cane while participating in Orientation and Mobility activities and demonstrating resilience and confidence on the Square class’s first outing to the bridge👏

Junior Years assembly finished with a dance to a song of Jordan’s choice – ‘Die with a smile’ by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars🕺

This week we held our annual Wear Your Words Day to celebrate AAC Awareness Month 🥳

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. This looks like gestures, body language, sign language, pictures, symbols and computer-based systems.

On the day, students and staff wore clothing that included words, phrases or symbols. They also participated in a 'Wear Your Words Bingo' activity provided by our Department of Education Speech and Language Pathologist. The bingo card included: making a comment around your clothes using AAC; keeping your AAC system within arm's reach all day; saying positive words using an AAC system when students laugh; setting up situations for two students to chat to each other; waiting (counting to 10 in your head) and observing student responses; and sharing a communication success story on Teams.

Our students have so much to say and communicate in many different ways. We love all the communication accessibility that takes place every day at Narby 🙋

Last Friday we had our Middle Years assembly 🤩

Classes had so much to tell us during ‘Class Sharing and Celebrations’ time. Francis from the Star room used his Step-by-step switch to tell us about his new beach wheelchair that he used on the school holidays. Oval room 2 students shared that they have been learning about time – seconds, minutes, hours and days. They shared a game show demonstration and asked Deputy Principal Bec to answer the questions. Bec had to order activities based on the amount of time they take to do from shortest to longest. Circle room shared that they have started cooking this term as part of their English experiences unit. Most recently they made toast and practised the skills of pushing down the toaster lever and spreading. Rectangle room celebrated Ulil using the hopsa to move and explore and Marwa enjoying water play and her new treasure box. Hexagon room told us about their Media Arts unit and HPE. They have been choosing animal sounds to match special locations such as the beach. All Hexagon room learners are now swimming in the school pool.

Middle Years learners received awards for creativity and engagement during Media Arts; following instructions during HPE yoga sessions; enthusiastically participating in swimming and pool safety activities; showing confidence in the pool; starting Term 4 as a calm and engaged learner; confidently exploring new spaces and trying new fun activities; working with peers; demonstrating great effort, listening and following instructions during swimming; and confidently sharing ideas during Science lessons 👏

At the end of assembly, two awards recipients (Eli and Saiyan) chose songs for everyone to dance to – The Fate of Ophelia by Taylor Swift and Rip Rip Woodchip by John Williamson.

Tuesday 21 October will be "Wear Your Words" day at Narby.

Students and staff are encouraged to wear a shirt with writing on it to celebrate the importance of AAC in our lives.

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. We have many AAC users at Narby who share their thoughts via PODD book, Aided Language Display, sign language, electronic talker, tactile symbols or a combo of several approaches.

At Narbethong, we all have something to say!

Last Wednesday (15 October) we celebrated International White Cane Day 🦯

The day aims to highlight the confidence, independence and ability of people with low or no vision. We not only celebrate the use of the white cane but also the use of all of Orientation and Mobility (O&M) skills. O&M is one of the nine areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum for students who have vision impairment which is our school-based offering.

On Wednesday, learners participated in an O&M adventure and mapping activity. They followed clues designed around the O&M Near By Considerations strategy, to locate each place. At each location learners collected a small object that represented the place and took these materials back to their classrooms to create a tactile map or to have tactile materials to touch and explore when discussing the places they visited 👨‍🦯👩‍🦽

We acknowledge and recognise the important work of O&M specialists, teachers and teacher aides who support students using canes and other O&M strategies to access the curriculum and the many varied environments in which learning occurs.
Most of all we celebrate our amazing students. You are super stars!
