The False Hero in the Mirror of 'Self'

Among the various types of heroes found in fairy tales, novels, and stories, a unique character emerges—the False Hero. This character appears in narratives with the intention of claiming the role of the Hero or Heroine, typically aligning with the gender of the actual hero.
The False Hero makes unwarranted claims, usurping the Hero's position along with everything associated, including possessions, affections, relationships, and even the essence of individuals themselves.

As a result, the Hero is compelled to undergo a series of trials to demonstrate that the False Hero's claims are false, and they are the authentic Hero. The Hero's experiences are relatable—a sense of injustice, betrayal, a peculiar loss of their social identity, and an incredible challenge to their authenticity. This challenge goes beyond mere self-presentation; it requires proving that their identity is genuine and evolving into a "greater self than before."

What motivates the False Hero in this scenario? Why does the False Hero boldly proclaim themselves as the Hero, even at the risk of exposure? What prevails in this situation over the fear of being revealed?

Another perspective to consider is our own occasional sense of being False Heroes, seemingly in our rightful place.

"My life is so good that it's almost frightening. Adults don't criticize me when I smoke and swear. They don't interfere when I stay up all night, and they don't force me to eat soup. Some adults even offer me alcohol and drugs. Moreover, I have an international passport and a valid driver's license. A couple of times, I even secured some adult job and earned real, adult money for it. It seems like I've managed to outsmart everyone." - M. Frei

Sometimes, the feeling of being "False" arises when we receive recognition and praise. Other times, it happens when we feel like we "don't deserve good treatment from others" or, having acquired education and a profession, hesitate to present ourselves to the professional community as colleagues.

The "Heroes and Villains" projective cards are created based on an activity-oriented approach, encompassing elements from various schemes of activity. This is why, with their help, you can craft a strategic planning scheme for any project.
The components of the schemes depicted on the cards prompt you to think carefully about what you want to accomplish, what tools you should utilize, and, most importantly, what your purpose is.

Perceiving oneself as a "Warrior/Defender," and likewise identifying as a "Victim," inevitably implies the existence of an "Enemy." Declaring oneself a victim is impossible without pointing to the wrongdoer. Engaging in a battle requires choosing (even if unconsciously) an adversary against whom one takes a stand and a victim one aims to protect.

Escaping this perpetual struggle is daunting because this scheme is simple yet extraordinarily tempting in its simplicity. Roles are clearly defined and assigned: are you a victim? Endure and suffer! Are you an enemy? Attack and pursue! Are you a defender? Here is the enemy; here is the victim – you know what to do.

Constructing behavior models that are unconventional, new, and simply unknown is challenging. In such cases, one can turn to Cards as a constructor: assembling and modifying components until the model becomes tangible and real. Then, work on bringing it to life.

📍The advantage of projective cards as a counseling method (and sometimes as nonparametric psychodiagnostics) lies in the fact that their purpose is usually disguised, preventing the subject from guessing the ways of interpreting diagnostic indicators and their connection to various personality manifestations. Consequently, they refrain from masking, distorting, or resorting to defensive reactions during examination.

I apply my own authored projective cards, "Heroes & Villains," in various types of counseling, including training sessions. For instance, in organizational counseling, a common issue voiced by clients is the challenge of experiencing a complex array of unpleasant sensations when interacting with superiors.

📍The client describes a work situation as an incredibly painful experience of humiliation. When asked to precisely depict what is happening and influencing their feelings, the client may repeatedly emphasize that the boss is a villain, eager to humiliate them by all available means, "setting them up," "pressuring," and oppressing. The narrative is rich in emotions, making it difficult to discern specific facts.

📍When, through projective cards, we construct a unique scheme (based on clarifying questions like: what specifically did he say/do?), it often turns out that the subjective assessment of the situation directly contradicts objective facts.
For example, in this scenario, the boss (Strategist) issues a standard directive ("request/order"). Meanwhile, the client positions themselves as a "Fool" (a card indicating the person executing tasks without personal goals/interests in this situation) and decides to complete the task set by the boss for "reward" (salary, bonus, etc.). However, they perceive themselves as a "Victim." We then explore how the client experiences such feelings in regular work situations and discuss the preferred scenario instead of the current one.

The client's request to a psychologist usually represents only a small aspect of the challenges they are facing.

The crux of the problem is its difficulty to be formulated, articulated, and consequently operationalized—broken down into components. The process of operationalizing and formulating the problem is already a step towards finding a solution.

Positional analysis serves as a method for objectifying the situation—individuals instinctively select a card that inexplicably draws them in, even if they initially feel averse to it.
