All Yoga Moves West classes are designed to be inclusive with absolute beginners and experienced yoga lovers all welcome. Variations are tailored to suit the needs of different bodies and skill sets. No matter your age, fitness or flexibility, our classes allow you to work at your own pace with the availability of bolsters, blocks and straps for a supportive and safe practice.

Hi there, have we met?

My name is Catherine, and I am the yoga teacher at Yoga Moves West.

When I started Yoga Moves West 10 years ago, I wanted to create an accessible and inclusive space where I could share the benefits of yoga to anyone who wished to participate. In my classes I encourage students to “check-in” with themselves, to listen to the messages of their body, and over time develop greater self-awareness, intuition, and self-acceptance. I believe that it does not matter what you do, yoga can help you do it better!

“I see you, I hear you, I honour you” is one of my interpretations of the Sanskrit word Namaste that you’ll often hear at the end of a yoga class. The most common being “I bow to the divine in you” or “the sacred in me recognizes the sacred in you”, however you like to interpret it, it’s a pretty special feeling to be seen & heard for exactly who you are.

A little sequence you can try at home that I sometimes like to start my home practice with as it warms the spine up by moving in all directions - sitting on a block or cushion, grounding through the sits bones and lifting up through the spine and crown of the head, interlace fingers and take overhead, rolling shoulders down the back to create space for your neck. Lowering one arm to the floor while lifting up through the other before taking a side stretch, follow with a gentle twist, finishing with a forward bend. Remember to repeat to the other side!

Balasana or Child’s Pose, is a pose of rest. It is a pose where we give ourselves permission to not do, to just be, where the body can be still and rest. It is a foundational yoga posture that reminds us that inaction can be as valuable as action. Child’s pose is a gentle stretch for the shoulders, back, hips, neck, and ankles, and can also help in relieving back pain. You can practice as pictured with arms outstretched, or arms by your side with shoulders relaxed forward, or making two fists and resting forehead on the fists.

Always remember to breathe …

This photo came up as a memory from 4 years ago today and it reminds me of how different life was back then. We were in lockdown and our lives felt very small and I learned to find joy and be grateful for the small and simple things in life ... like doing yoga and meditating with my cat.

Take a moment now, if you can, to acknowledge and be grateful for a small and simple thing/experience you often take for granted ... take a moment to pause, breathe and express gratitude.

And then perhaps join us in class tonight at Iramoo Community Centre at 7.30pm
