Stop ignoring that midnight tingle!😴✋

Do you wake up in the middle of the night needing to "shake out" your hands? Or maybe you’ve noticed a lingering numbness while driving or holding your phone? Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve gets squeezed as it passes through the narrow tunnel in your wrist.

Here are 3 classic signs it might be CTS:
1️⃣ The "Big Three" Numbness: You feel tingling specifically in your thumb, index, and middle fingers (the pinky is usually fine!).
2️⃣ Night-time Wakeups: Pain or numbness that gets worse at night or early in the morning.
3️⃣ The "Drops": Suddenly finding yourself dropping objects or having a "fumbling" grip.

The Good News:
You don’t have to jump straight to surgery! Hand therapy can often resolve symptoms through nerve gliding, custom night splinting, and activity modification.

Don't wait until you can't grip your morning coffee! ☕ Click the link in our bio to book an appointment with our experienced hand therapists.

Great weekend of learning for Jamison and Lincoln at the GEMt Upper Limb Dry Needling Course 🙌.

They have expanded their skills in assessing and treating myofascial pain and trigger points across the shoulder, arm and hand - with plenty of hands-on practice to refine technique and improve clinical outcomes.

Huge shout out to the team Robert and Deb for delivering such an evidence-based, practical and well structured course. Always great to keep growing and bringing new skills back to our patients! 💪👋

Ever wondered why your fingers go all wrinkly in the shower or pool? 🛁
It’s not just your skin “soaking up water” – it’s actually your nervous system at work, squeezing tiny blood vessels so the skin puckers like tyre treads. This creates better traction on wet, slippery surfaces and may have helped our ancestors grab food or rocks in rivers.

Pretty wild that “pruney fingers” are actually a built‑in grip upgrade. 👋💦

The human hand: A tiny, living masterpiece 🖐⚙️

Think about this:
your hand can generate powerful grip to hold your entire body weight on a bar… and then instantly switch to the delicate precision needed to thread a needle.
It’s accurate, strong, precise, fast, and incredibly well‑controlled – all in a compact structure at the end of your arm.

Inside one hand are dozens of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves, all coordinating in milliseconds so you can catch a falling object, protect yourself in a stumble, or make a split‑second adjustment on a steering wheel.
Your hand can sense a tiny grain of sand under a dressing, the warmth of a coffee cup, or the slightest change in texture of a keyboard key.

The fingertips are packed with sensory receptors that let your brain build a detailed 3D picture of the world without you even looking.
Every button you do up, every zipper you pull, every message you type is a silent example of this extraordinary system working perfectly in the background.

So the next time you use your hands today – to hold a child’s hand, to cook, to drive, to scroll – take a second to notice the quiet, constant brilliance in every single movement.

Your hands are not just tools.
They are a true masterpiece of biological engineering

Your brain has a ‘hand obsession’ 🧠✋

The primary motor cortex is organised like a map, where different body parts take up different amounts of brain ‘real estate’.

Body regions that need very precise, skilled movement – like the hands and face – occupy a disproportionately large area compared with larger but less precise areas like the trunk.

That means fine hand tasks (writing, playing instruments, dexterity training) are incredibly brain-intensive, driving a lot of cortical activity and plasticity.

After a hand injury, we’re not only rehabbing muscles and tendons, we’re also helping the brain rewire its hand maps.

Your ring and little fingers are doing more work than you think 💪

When we talk about grip strength, most people think of the thumb and index finger – but the ring and little fingers are power players.

Experimental studies show that if you exclude the ring and little fingers from gripping, total grip strength can drop by roughly 34–67%, with an average loss of about 55%.

So more than a third of your grip strength can come from these fingers, especially for power and tool use.

Tag someone who always underestimates their ring and little fingers!

Anatomy quirk: your little finger might be ‘missing’ a tendon 👀

The flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) usually helps bend the middle joint (PIP) of each finger. But some people are missing this tendon in the little finger.

Studies suggest that around 7–18% of people have an absent FDS to the little finger, often with perfectly normal hand function.

That’s why some people can’t bend the little finger’s middle joint on its own, no matter how hard they try – it’s anatomy, not effort.

Have you ever checked if your little finger FDS is independent on both hands?”

Anatomy Fun Fact!

The palmaris longus is a slim tendon you can sometimes see in the middle of the wrist when you touch your thumb to the little finger and flex the wrist.

Around 10–20% of people don’t have it at all, and it makes no difference to grip or hand function.

Because it’s so ‘expendable’, surgeons often borrow it as a graft tendon for hand and wrist procedures.

Have you checked if you have one on both sides?
