STOP! 🛑 Before you birth on your back... Think about this... ⬇️
1️⃣ It's the most exhausting position to birth, because both Mama and Baby have to work against gravity pushing up an incline through the birth canal.
Plus, it increases the risk of tearing!
2️⃣ It has been shown to decrease your pelvis by up to 20%. That's 1/5 of your pelvis size that you are losing for Baby to pass through!
Baby gets 'stuck' and you will hear " Baby is too big. You need a c-section now!"
3️⃣ Due to major blood vessels located posterior to the uterus, lying on your back can constrict and limit the flow of blood and oxygen to Baby.
Baby is already exhausted and is now receiving limited amounts of blood and oxygen - the very thing we need to live! And now you will possibly hear "Baby's heart rate is dropping. baby is distressed. You are failing to progress. You need XYZ intervention now!"
When you think about why many women are told they are failing to progress, baby is distressed, baby is too big, or whatever other 'reason' labour isn't flowing as it should and many interventions are needed, is it any wonder when we have forced Mama's to give birth in positions that do not support birth??
Mama's, there is a better way!
Studies have shown when you follow your own birthing wisdom (and common sense) by using upright positions and movement during labour and birth, not only does it reduce the amount of issues and complications that you may experience lying down, but the risk of perineal tears and damaged pelvic floors are lessened, labours may be quicker and the number of interventions are greatly reduced because you are working WITH your body and your baby.
Remember, your body is designed and knows how to birth; we just need to listen to it.
