🚧 J𝗢𝗕𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗧:
Visible on Australian jobsites, two new safety signs are sparking a major conversation about the hidden risks in standard construction-grade sunscreens.
While we’ve always been taught to "Slip, Slop, Slap," new evidence is highlighting that the 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 in many common sunscreens—designed to absorb into the skin—might be carrying their own health risks.
Here is a breakdown of what these new signs are warning about and how to properly protect your team.
🚫 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 𝟭: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 '𝗥𝗘𝗗 𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧' 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗦
The first sign isn't messing around; it’s a direct warning against specific 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 that have been red-flagged internationally. Many of these are banned or severely restricted in the EU 🇪🇺 but are still common in the cheap, bulk-pump bottles often found on sites.
🛑 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝟰" 𝘁𝗼 avoid on your skin:
⚠️ 𝟰-𝗠𝗕𝗖 (𝟰-𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝘆𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗻𝘇𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗿): A 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗿. Banned for safety in the EU.
⚠️ 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲: Linked to hormone disruption. (EU limits it to 0.5%; AU allows 30x more at 15%).
⚠️ 𝗢𝘅𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲: Highly absorbable; linked to allergies, cellular damage, and reef harm 🌊.
⚠️ 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗿𝘆𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗲: Degrades into benzophenone, a known carcinogen, over time.
🟢 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 𝟮: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝟳𝟵+ 𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘𝗧𝗬 𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗘"
The second sign introduces a new jobsite mandate: ✅ If it’s under 79 on Yuka, it’s not allowed on-site.
Sites are now asking workers to use the free 𝗬𝘂𝗸𝗮 𝗔𝗽𝗽 📱 to scan their sunscreen ingredients. Yuka is an independent health checker that instantly rates a product's safety. To pass on-site, a product must have a Yuka score of 𝟳𝟵/𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿. This guarantees it is free from hazardous endocrine disruptors and potential carcinogens.
🌟 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌟
To hit that 79+ score and get on-site, you need 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 (𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹) 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻.
🌿 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Look for 𝗭𝗶𝗻𝗰 𝗢𝘅𝗶𝗱𝗲 or 𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗗𝗶𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗱𝗲.
🛡️ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: Minerals create a physical barrier on top of the skin that reflects UV like a mirror 🪞. They don't absorb.
🌟 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁: They are safer, provide immediate protection, and are "Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective" (GRASE) by the FDA 🏅.
💡 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 HS&E Managers & Workers
Site safety isn't just about preventing a sunburn today; it’s about preventing chronic disease, hormone disruption, and cancer ten years from now.
It’s time to phase out the chemical cocktails.
Check your current bottles: Is your protection a mineral shield 🛡️, or a chemical absorption? 🤔
