We've all heard it before: "I'd rather have a root canal đŸ˜Ŗ."

But here's the thing: the root canal's negative reputation comes from the pain of a tooth infection, a cracked tooth, or whatever got you into the dental chair. The root canal treatment is what RIDS you of that pain! It removes the infection and inflammation and allows your to save your tooth. đŸĻˇ

Plus, any pain that used to be associated with the procedure is ancient history. đŸ—ī¸ Today's anesthetic and technology-- like microscopes and 3D imaging-- make for a painless procedure that's over before you know it.

Most people believe that brushing twice a day is enough to maintain good oral health. But what many don’t realize is that brushing alone can’t remove hardened deposits that form over time. These yellowish layers near the gumline — known as tartar or calculus — are made of mineralized plaque. Once formed, no toothpaste or home remedy can remove them.

Tartar builds up silently. It creates rough surfaces that trap more bacteria and food debris, which leads to inflammation of the gums. If left untreated, this can progress to gum disease, bone loss, and eventually, tooth mobility or loss. The earliest signs are often ignored — mild bleeding while brushing, persistent bad breath, or slight gum recession. But these are not normal. They are warning signs.

That’s why professional dental cleaning — also called scaling and polishing — is recommended at least twice a year. It’s not a luxury procedure. It’s preventive care. Scaling removes tartar deposits from areas your toothbrush can’t reach, while polishing helps smooth the enamel surface, making it harder for plaque to reattach.

Beyond the mouth, gum infections are linked to increased risks of heart disease, diabetes complications, and even certain respiratory conditions. The connection between oral health and overall health is stronger than ever, backed by decades of research.

If you haven’t had a cleaning in the past six months, it may be time. Not because of pain — but to prevent it from ever starting. Prevention is always more comfortable, more affordable, and more effective than treatment.

Impacted wisdom teeth are third molars that don't have enough space to fully erupt in the mouth. Because of this, they often grow at odd angles — pushing against the second molars. What’s alarming is that this damage usually happens without any noticeable pain in the early stages. You might feel completely fine, while silent destruction is taking place underneath the gums.

As the impacted wisdom tooth presses against the second molar, it can slowly erode the healthy tooth's root or enamel. This constant pressure can create a trap for bacteria and food particles, increasing the risk of deep cavities, gum infections, and even bone loss between the two teeth. If left undetected, the healthy molar — which is critical for chewing — might end up needing a root canal, a large filling, or even extraction.

Since the process is often painless at first, many patients don’t realize there’s a problem until it’s too late. That’s why dentists recommend regular X-rays during the late teens or early twenties, when wisdom teeth typically start to erupt. Catching the problem early means the difference between a simple extraction and permanent damage to your healthy teeth.

If you still have your wisdom teeth and haven’t had them evaluated recently, it’s worth visiting Habib Dental for an updated scan. Early action can save your smile from long-term complications.

Aggressive brushing is a common habit many people develop, thinking it will clean their teeth more effectively. However, using too much pressure while brushing can actually harm your mouth instead of helping it. The gums, especially in the lower front region, are delicate and not designed to withstand harsh scrubbing or hard bristles.

Over time, aggressive brushing causes the gum tissue to wear away, leading to gum recession. This means the gums slowly pull back from the tooth surface, exposing the roots, which are much more sensitive and not protected by enamel. As a result, patients may experience increased tooth sensitivity, root decay, and an unaesthetic appearance. In some cases, even the surface of the tooth near the gumline may begin to wear down.

This kind of damage is not always reversible. Once the gum tissue is lost, it doesn't grow back on its own, and treatment like gum grafting may be required in more severe cases. It's important to understand that more pressure does not mean better cleaning—it simply means more risk of long-term oral health problems.

To brush properly, always use a soft-bristled toothbrush, hold it at a 45-degree angle to the gumline, and use gentle, circular motions. Avoid scrubbing back and forth. Brush for two minutes, twice a day, and don’t forget to be as gentle with your gums as you are with your teeth. Proper technique protects both your teeth and the delicate tissues around them.

A study found that children with untreated cavities are more likely to experience poor growth and nutritional deficiencies. The research observed over 1,400 children and revealed a strong association between dental caries in early childhood and lower body weight, shorter height, and delayed eruption of permanent teeth.

The findings suggest that dental infections and chronic tooth pain can lead to difficulty in eating, poor appetite, and disrupted sleep, all of which contribute to reduced calorie and nutrient intake. This can impair the child’s physical development and overall health, especially during critical growth years.

The study highlights the importance of early dental care, regular check-ups, and timely treatment of cavities. Raising awareness among parents, schools, and caregivers about the long-term effects of untreated tooth decay is crucial—not just for oral health, but for the child’s entire physical development.

Flossing regularly may lower the risk of some strokes as well as a type of irregular heart rhythm that can increase stroke risk, new research suggests.

The findings, show people who flossed at least once a week had a lower risk for strokes caused by blood clots coming from the heart and for an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation, or AFib, that can lead to a stroke.

A study reveals a strong link between oral health and brain health. Scientists found that people with high levels of antibodies against gum disease bacteria tend to have more severe Alzheimer’s symptoms.

This means the bacteria from our mouths could be quietly affecting our brains too.

Gum disease is not just an oral health issue—it’s a serious systemic health concern.

đŸ”ĩ Here's how it happens:

When plaque builds up on teeth and gums, it harbors bacteria that cause inflammation. In periodontitis, these bacteria and inflammatory mediators can enter the bloodstream through bleeding gums.

Once in circulation, they can:

➥ī¸ Trigger systemic inflammation that contributes to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries).

➥ī¸ Promote plaque buildup in blood vessels, increasing the risk of blockages.

➥ī¸ Elevate C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, a marker associated with heart disease.

➥ī¸ Potentially cause endothelial dysfunction, impairing blood vessel health.

Several studies show a strong link between chronic periodontal disease and increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, and diabetes.

Regular annual dental check up is important for overall well-being of your health.
Do you know people with periodontal disease are about twice as likely to have a heart attack compared to people who have healthy gums?

About two-thirds of people over 65 have periodontal disease, which is linked to a higher risk of heart disease. Shared risk factors such as smoking and an unhealthy diet may explain the association...
