In a time when female surgeons were rare in Bangladesh, Professor Dr. Tahmina Banu chose the path less traveled—not just to practice it, but to transform it. With a vision far ahead of her time, she became the first female pediatric surgeon in Bangladesh, breaking barriers that once seemed unshakable.

After earning her MBBS from Chittagong Medical College, she completed her MS in Pediatric Surgery at Dhaka Shishu Hospital in 1992. In 1993, she founded the Pediatric Surgery Department at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). What began as a department with limited resources soon became a center of excellence under her leadership, shaping the future of pediatric surgery in Bangladesh.

Her relentless pursuit of knowledge took her across Australia and the USA, training at world-class institutions. But her heart remained in Bangladesh, where she knew more needed to be done. In 2017, she founded Chittagong Research Institute for Children Surgery (CRICS)—the first of its kind, dedicated to advancing pediatric surgical care and research.

Through her unwavering determination, she has trained over 70 pediatric surgeons, pioneered life-saving techniques, and made surgical care accessible to children in rural areas.

Today, we celebrate Professor Dr. Tahmina Banu, a name that stands for courage, motivation, and change.
