Bangladesh has taken a remarkable step toward ensuring dignity and quality care for its rapidly aging population. 🇧🇩
The Asian Development Bank, in collaboration with the 𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗧 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, organized the National Dissemination Program on the Country Diagnostic Study on Long-Term Care for Older People in Bangladesh on October 28, 2025.
This landmark event marked the official launch of the country’s first-ever Country Diagnostic Study on Long-Term Care, which presents a comprehensive, evidence-based roadmap to establish a gender-responsive, affordable, and people-centered long-term care (LTC) system for older persons in Bangladesh.
Key insights were shared by Dr. Mohammad Abu Yusuf, Secretary, Ministry of Social Welfare, Bangladesh/ সমাজকল্যাণ মন্ত্রণালয়, বাংলাদেশ; Mr. Akira Matsunaga, Deputy Country Director, ADB; Mr. Francesco Tornieri, Principal Social Development Specialist (Social Inclusion), ADB; and Mr. Tahsin Aman, Chairperson, AYAT Education Foundation.
Presenting the key findings and recommendations from the study, Ms. Nasheeba Selim, Principal Social Development Officer (Gender), ADB Bangladesh Resident Mission, and Mr. Imran Chowdhury, National Aged Care Consultant, ADB, and Chief Operating Officer of AYAT Education Foundation, highlighted critical policy priorities. These include the need for a National LTC Policy and Strategy, investments in care workforce development, integrated health and social care systems, and innovative financing mechanisms to ensure accessibility and sustainability.
A special panel discussion titled “Innovative Financing Mechanisms Towards a Sustainable Long-Term Care System in Bangladesh”, moderated by Ms. Nusrat Aman, Chief Executive Officer, AYAT Education Foundation, brought together experts from the Department of Social Services - DSS, Bangladesh সমাজসেবা অধিদফতর, বাংলাদেশ, UN Women Bangladesh , UNFPA Bangladesh, CARE Bangladesh, and Christian Aid Bangladesh. Panelists explored how Bangladesh can leverage public, private, and community-based financing to build a sustainable and inclusive care system for the future.
The dissemination program brought together senior government officials, development partners, UN agencies, embassies, academia, civil society, and private institutions — all united by a shared vision to protect older persons, empower women, and ensure that every Bangladeshi can age with dignity, inclusion, and care.
