ছবিটা দেখে আরেকবার মনে পড়ে গেলো, বাংলাদেশের মানুষ কেন ক্ষমতা চায়।

কেন অন্য চাকরিতে একই গ্রেডের বেতন পেলেও বিসিএস ক্যাডার হবার জন্য বছরের পর বছর বেকার থেকে, টিউশন করিয়ে বয়স শেষ হওয়া পর্যন্ত বিসিএসের প্রস্তুতি নেয়।

সে যাই হোক, ছবিটা দেখে আজকে একটু অসহায়ই বোধ হলো৷ নাহিদ ইসলাম পায়ে ব্যথা পেয়েছেন। গুনে গুনে ১১ জন দৃশ্যমান ডাক্তার সেখানে উপস্থিত। থাকতেই পারেন। এতে আমার মাথাব্যথা নেই। কিন্তু যে কারণে মাথাব্যথা-

আজ সকালে ডাক্তার দেখাতে গেলাম পিজি হাসপাতালে। উদ্দ্যেশ্য স্কিন এবং ডেন্টিস্ট্রি ডিপার্টমেন্ট। প্রথমে সিরিয়াল দিয়ে টিকেট নিলাম৷ গেলাম ৭ তলায়৷ স্কিনের ডাক্তার আমাকে সময় দিলেন বড়জোর ৪০-৫০ সেকেন্ড। দুটো সমস্যা নিয়ে গিয়েছিলাম। একটা সমস্যা বলার পরেই, আমার প্রেসক্রিপশন তৈরি।

-বললাম ডক্টর, মেডিকেল হিস্ট্রিটা একটু জানাই। এর আগেও কিছু মেডিসিন নিয়ে কাজ হয়নি...

-লাগবে না, বলে থামিয়ে দিলেন।

বায়োটেকনোলজি এন্ড জেনেটিক ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং বিভাগে পড়ে অন্তত মেডিকেল হিস্ট্রি, পূর্বের মেডিকেশন (ব্যবহৃত ওষুধ ও ডোজ), রোগ নির্ণয় ও প্রতিকারে মেডিসিন প্রেসক্রাইব করার জন্য কতটুকু জরুরি তা আমি জানি। ডক্টরও জানেন। কিন্তু যেখানে দেশের মানুষের জীবনের দাম নাই। ওখানে স্কিনের এতো দাম কীভাবে হয়!

-বললাম, "ডক্টর আরেকটা প্রব্লেম..."
-ডাক্তার আমাকে থামিয়ে বললেন, আগে একটার চিকিৎসা শেষ করেন৷ পরে দেখায়েন আরেকটা।

সমস্যা হচ্ছে একটা সমস্যা শেষ করে, আরেকটা সমস্যার চিকিৎসা শুরু করলে সেটা ভবিষ্যতে কতটুকু গুরুতর পর্যায়ে যাবে সেটা তিনিও খুব ভালো করে জানেন৷ কিন্তু ওটা তার চিন্তার বিষয় নয়৷ ওনার চিন্তা সময় নিয়ে। খাতায় রোগীর নাম এন্ট্রি করে রোগীকে তাড়াতে পারলে বাঁচে।

একগাদা মন খারাপ নিয়ে গেলাম, ১১ তলায় ডেনিস্ট্রি বিভাগে৷ সব রুম প্রায় তালাবদ্ধ। BMU এর ২ জন ট্রেইনি ডক্টর বাদে অর্থডন্টিক বিভাগে কোনো প্রফেসর তখন ডিউটিতে ছিলেন না। সবাই ছুটিতে। ১১১৫ নম্বর কক্ষে গিয়ে পাই একজন ট্রেইনি ডাক্তারকে। তিনি বই পড়ছিলেন। খুব সম্ভবত, শীঘ্রই কোনো একাডেমিক পরীক্ষা আছে।

দরজা নক করে ভেতরে আসবো কিনা জানতে চাইলে, তিনি ঠোঁট বাঁকিয়ে এমন এক্সপ্রেশন দিলেন। মনে করেন আগেকার দিনে কোনো শূদ্র ব্রাহ্মণকে ছুঁয়ে ফেললে যেমন এক্সপ্রেশন দেয়ার কথা, খানিকটা অমন। অচ্ছুৎ টাইপের একটা ফিল দিলেন। এ দেশে এতকিছু গায়ে মাখলে হয় না। যাক গে।

দাঁতের ট্রিটমেন্টে দাঁত উঠিয়ে ফেলতে হতে পারে। সাথে প্রায় লাখখানেক টাকা খরচ। চিকিৎসা কোন পদ্ধতিতে করবো সেই সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে, সবকিছু মিলিয়ে আমার কিছু বিষয়ে জানার ছিলো। কিন্তু তিনি কোনো উত্তরই দিলেন না৷ বললেন, ২ টা টেস্ট করিয়ে সিরিয়াল দিয়ে যেতে। ১ মাস পরে আসতে!

মানে wth! একটা মাসে মানুষের জীবন-মৃত্যুর প্রশ্ন চলে আসে।

১১ তলা থেকে ৭ তলায় গিয়ে টিকেট নিলাম। ৬ তলায় পেমেন্ট করলাম। আবার ১১ তলায় এসে X-ray OPG এর সামনে সিরিয়াল দিলাম। এবার ঘটলো অন্য কাহিনি, মেশিন কাজ করছে না৷ একজনকে টেস্ট করার পরে, ১০ মিনিট মেশিনকে রেস্ট দিয়ে পরের জনেরটা টেস্ট করাতে হবে।

এই হচ্ছে, খুবই মাইনর দুটো রোগের ডাক্তার দেখাতে একজন অনার্স পড়ুয়া বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় শিক্ষার্থীর দশা৷

খেটে খাওয়া, অশিক্ষিত, অর্ধ-শিক্ষিত সেই রাজনৈতিক/অর্থনৈতিক প্রভাবহীন মানুষগুলোর চিকিৎসা সেবা কাছে থেকে দেখলে বুঝবেন, দেশে মৌলিক অধিকার বলে কিছু নেই।

দেশের বিত্তশালী বা রাজনৈতিকভাবে প্রভাবশালী না হলে, আপনার জীবনের দাম ১০ টাকার টিকেট পর্যন্তই।

আন্তর্জাতিক খ্যাতি সম্পন্ন বাংলাদেশ লিভার ফাউন্ডেশনের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও লিভার ট্রান্সপ্লান্ট সার্জন অধ্যাপক ডাক্তার মোহাম্মদ আলীর লেখা "লিভার জানুন এবং ভালো থাকুন" বইটি আমার দেখার এবং পড়ার সৌভাগ্য হল। বাংলা ভাষায় সাধারণ পাঠকের জন্য লিভারের উপরে এমন তথ্যবহুল বইয়ের দীর্ঘদিন ধরে অভাব অনুভব করেছি। বাংলাদেশের লিভারের নানাবিধ রোগের ব্যাপক উপস্থিতি লক্ষ্য করেছি। এমন কোন পরিবার নাই যেখানে কেউ হেপাটাইটিস রোগে ভোগে নাই। জানাশুনার মধ্যে এমন কেউ নাই যার সিরোসিস অফ লিভার হয় নাই। ইদানিংকালে লিভার ক্যান্সারও অনেক দেখা যায়। শুধু রোগ বলে কথা না রোগের উপসর্গ, রোগ নির্ধারণ উপযুক্ত পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা, চিকিৎসার পরামর্শ এবং চিকিৎসা পাওয়া ও সেই সাথে রোগীর সেবা যত্ন অত্যন্ত সময় সাপেক্ষ জটিল এবং ব্যয়বহুল। আমি মনে করি চিকিৎসার সাথে যারা সংশ্লিষ্ট আত্মীয়স্বজন তাদের রোগ সম্বন্ধে একটা সুস্পষ্ট ধারণা থাকা উচিত যাতে করে রোগের প্রসার ও জটিলতা উপলব্ধি করতে পারেন । "লিভার জানুন এবং ভালো থাকুন" বইটি প্রতিটি সচেতন পাঠকের জন্য অবশ্যই পাঠনীয়। অধ্যাপক মোহাম্মদ আলী তার ভূমিকা লিখেছেন "আমি দৃঢ়ভাবে বিশ্বাস করি যে একজন চিকিৎসকের দায়িত্ব কেবল চেম্বার ক্লিনিক বা অপারেশন থিয়েটারের মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ নয় চিকিৎসকবৃন্দের উচিত জনসাধারণের মধ্যে তাদের অর্জিত জ্ঞান ছড়িয়ে দেওয়া প্রত্যেক চিকিৎসক অথবা যিনি যে রোগের বিশেষজ্ঞ তিনি সেই রোগের প্রতিরোধের জন্য জনসাধারণের মাঝে সচেতনতা সৃষ্টিতে কাজ করা এবং প্রতিরোধমূলক পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণে সবাইকে উদ্বুদ্ধ করা তার নৈতিক দায়িত্ব"। উনার এই চিন্তা-চেতনার সাথে আমি শতভাগ সহমত পোষণ করি।
এই বইটিতে লিভার সম্পর্কে প্রাথমিক ধারণা দেওয়া আছে' সকল প্রকার হেপাটাইটিস সম্বন্ধে তথ্যবহুল বিবরণ দেওয়া আছে, তাছাড়া লিভারের বিভিন্ন রোগ সম্বন্ধে আলোচনা আছে, অন্যান্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় যেমন লিভার সম্পর্কিত উপকারী বিষয়, নবজাতকের জন্ডিস, লিভারের জটিল রোগসমূহ চিকিৎসা ও প্রতিরোধ, লিভারের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অপারেশন এবং সবশেষে লিভার ট্রান্সপ্লান্টেশন এর উপরে সম্যক ধারণা দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করা হয়েছে।
বইটির প্রচ্ছদ অত্যন্ত মানসম্মত। বইটির কাগজ ও ছাপা সুন্দর এবং বিভিন্ন চিত্র দ্বারা বিষয়গুলি আলোচনা করা হয়েছে।
বইটি অত্যন্ত যত্ন সহকারে সম্পাদিত হয়েছে।
আমি মনে করি বাংলাদেশের সব চিকিৎসকের হাতে বইটি থাকা উচিত এবং লিভার রোগীদের বইটি পড়ার জন্য তারা যেন রোগী এবং রোগীর আত্মীয়-স্বজনকে উৎসাহিত করেন।

Remembering Col Quazi Shaffiuddin Ahmed (25th August 1951–22nd June 2007) Physician & Interventional Cardiologist.

Colonel Quazi Shaffiuddin was 10th child of Quazi Abdur Rouf and Syeda Khatun. His father, Quazi Abdur Rouf, was from Hooghly, West Bengal, India and mother, Syeda Khatun, was from Paikgram Kasba, Khulna. His parents belonged to renowned Quazi family in Hoogly and Khulna.
In 1947 they moved from Kolkata to Khulna and eventually settled in Dhaka in 1962. He was the second last of the eleven siblings. He married Amina Sabiha Ahmed (Pinky), the eldest daughter of Squadron Leader Mohammad Fazlul Karim and Bilkis Afzal. They had a son Quazi Shafat Ahmed and a daughter Sabah Shafeen. He did his SSC in 1967 from West End High School. He was placed in the first division with distinction in three subjects. In 1969 he passed out from Dhaka college in first division.

Professor Colonel Retired Dr Quazi Shaffiuddin Ahmed was born on 25th of August 1951 at Khulna in erstwhile East Pakistan. Col Shafi graduated from Dhaka Medical College in 1975. Col Shafi, was trained in internal medicine and obtained his FCPS-internal medicine. In 1985 he had extensive training in Cardiology in Sweden, Japan, and United Kingdom for more than 2 years.

Col Shafi was upright and an officer with strong personality. He had a scientific bent of mind and was an outstanding clinician. Should he have served continuously and would not have opted for early retirement he would have been the Consultant Physician General. There is a particular incident that I would like to mention here regarding a patient admitted under my care in Medical ward-1, who was confused and disoriented and febrile. I thought he had enteric fever, and he was not responding to treatment. I called Shfafi to have a look. He diagnosed the patient clinically and said he is moving into cerebral Malaria. It is better to give him Quinine injection. The patient survived. Col Shafi and I resided in Rupsa quarters early in our career as next-door neighbor. I believe that Shafi followed the clinical style of Late General Anis Waiz from whom he was inspired. After retirement he served in Lab Aid Cardiac Hospital and gained perfect skills in interventional cardiology. During his service he was the Chief interventional cardiologist and head of the department of cardiology Combined Military Hospital Dhaka of Bangladesh Army. He is well known for his pioneering role in introducing non invasive and interventional procedures in Bangladesh. Shafi knew what he believed in and was fearless in expressing it. He served Bangladesh Army for long 27 years. The first colour Doppler Echo cardiography in Bangladesh was performed in 1990 in the non-invasive lab of CMH Dhaka. Transophageal echocardiography was also done in the early 90s, the only one of its kind in the country in that time. He started doing coronary angiography successfully since 1995. He performed the first ASD device closure in the country on 23rd of June 2001. It was a cruel turn of destiny that he suffered a heart attack at night and drove himself to Lab Aid Cardiac Hospital where received the initial treatment. Subsequently he went to Singapore for better management and unfortunately he suffered asystole but was not noticed by the nurse on duty and he went into ischemic encephalopathy and was brought back to Dhaka and was admitted to ICU, CMH Dhaka. After 2 months of Intensive Care, he expired on 22nd June 2007.

1st April 2023 is the 98th Birth anniversary of a great physician and the first Consultant Physician of Bangladesh Armed Forces .
" Physicians page" is proud to post his short biography.

Brigadier (Dr) AKM Nawab Ali was the third of four siblings born to Shaikh Taseer uddin Ahmed, Revenue Officer and Khairun Nessa, housewife on the 1st of April 1925. He grew up in their beautiful village home at Chandni Mahal in Khulna. When he passed his Matriculation and Higher Secondary certificate exam in First division with Distinction people from surrounding villages came to see him and congratulated his parents. Many Hindu neighbours suggested that with such academic feats he should try to get admission in a Medical College. Fortunately he got admission into Calcutta Medical College ,the premier medical institute of the time, passed out successfully & got his MB(Cal) degree in 1947. It was during the partition period when there were lot of Hindu Muslim riots but his Hindu classmates kept him safe from harm. In the same year he got married to Momena Khatun Shefali hailing from Satkhira, Khulna.
In 1958 he obtained his MRCP from London and DTM& H from England and returned by ship to Karachi.
His first posting was in Peshawar and subsequently Rawalpindi and Dhaka. I had the occasion to see him in Peshawar Cantt as a kid. In 1964 he was posted to PNS Shifa, a famous Naval Hospital in Karachi.
In 1971 during the liberation war Lt.Cdr(Rtd) Md Amjad Hossain, his elder son- in- law, a valiant Freedom Fighter, was arrested, court martialled, convicted and jailed for 7 years for conspiring to escape to India with a mini submarine. His second son-in-law(Cdre. SS Nizam) was also a Freedom Fighter. He was a Junior officer in the same mini submarine. He belonged to the Elite Commando unit.
After the Liberation war he was confined in a Repatriation camp in Loralai in the foothills of mountainous region of Quetta.
By the end of 1973 he and his family were flown back to Dhaka and posted as a Medical Specialist in CMH Dhaka. He stayed in his own house at DOHS Banani which he built himself in 1963. In recognition of his professional excellence he was awarded FCPS from Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons. Before his retirement he became the Consultant Physician of Bangladesh Armed Forces. He was a great physician of name and fame and repute. He was an outstanding clinician of his time and I had the great fortune to be his student. Whatever clinical skills that I have acquired was from Brigadier Nawab Ali. In those days none of the modern diagnostic tools were available. There were only X-rays and ECG's. As a student I have seen him diagnosing pericardial effusion, pericardial tamponade, small tubercular plural effusion and cyst of the fourth ventricle absolutely on clinical grounds. These diagnoses were so inspiring and encouraging that I along with my other trainee doctors were amazed. His name and fame spread in all directions and people of all kinds of illnesses including surgical & dental patients came to see him for advice. He rightly diagnosed them and then sent to the specialists. Even orthopaedic and ENT patients came to him. He referred them to qualified specialist where he believed they would get the best possible attention. In his private practice his fees were absolutely minimal so that all categories of patient could come and see him for advice.
When he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier his Headmaster at Khalishpur high school declared a holiday.
He was proud to be a doctor and he was more proud as a teacher in Medicine. He was also a loving and affectionate head of a family of two sons who are successful businessman and two daughters , grand children and great grand children. He was soft spoken, kind, firm and generous.

Obituary: Prof Lutful Anwar Quadery FRCS.

Chittagong Medical College Alumni of USA deeply mourns the death of Professor Lutful Anowar Quadery and expresses heartfelt condolences to the family of Professor Quadery. A CMC alumnus of third batch(CMC3) Professor Quadery breathed his last yesterday in a hospital in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Born and raised in Chittagong, Professor Quadery went to Hathazari high school, Hathazari, Chittagong and then went to Chittagong College. Professor Quadery was a student of third batch of Chittagong Medical College and graduated in 1964. Throughout his student life Dr. Quadery stood first in all the professional examinations.
After working a few years in Chittagong Medical college Hospital Emergency department, Professor Quadery went to United Kingdom for higher studies. In 1968, he earned a diploma in Venereology from University of Liverpool and in 1971 he obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgery of Edinburgh and higher training diploma in Neuroscience. For the next ten years, he worked in different United Kingdom Hospital in academic roles in Neurosurgery.

Professor Quadery returned to Bangladesh in 1978 and joined Chittagong Medical College. At that time he founded the Neurosurgery department of Chittagong Medical College and joined as the Head of the department and Associate professor of Neurosurgery. After serving all his professional life, he retired from the same department as the professor and head of the department of Neurosurgery.
For his pioneering role in neurosurgery in Bangladesh, Professor Quadery has received numerous recognitions and awards including Gold Medals from Chittagong Shamaj Kolyan Porishod and ATCO Gold medal.
Professor Quadery also served as the President of Bangladesh Medical Association, Chittagong and CMC teachers Association. He also led many other organizations including Bangladesh Society of Neurosurgery, Bangladesh Society of Surgeons. He was the former President of Bangladesh Diabetic Association, Chittagong and till his passing he was serving as the Syndicate member of Chittagong Medical University.

During our war of Independence in 1971, professor Quadery joined UK based resistance movement and was an organizer of the UK based war time organization, Bangladesh Medical Association (BDMA).
Professor Quadery has always been very active at Chittagong Medical College Alumni activities. He was like the guardian and fatherly figure for all the alumni spanned across the globe. He attended several of the north American Alumni meet in USA. During the summer of 2020 - Professor Quadery represented CMC Alumni for handing over Alumni gifts of Oxygen supplies, noninvasive ventilators etc to the principal of Chittagong Medical College Hospital. In February 2020 CMC Alumni awarded Professor Quadery with the highest ranked honor - Lifetime achievement award for pioneering the field of Neurosurgery in Bangladesh and for organizing Physicians of Bangladesh origin in UK under the banner of BDMA during our war of independence in 1971.

Professor Emeritus Kazi Abdul Khaleque DBact, FRC Path, FCPS(Pak), FCPS(BD),
01 December 1919-- 20th August 2012.

Professor Kazi Abdul Khaleque was born on the 01 of December 1919. He passed Matriculation exam from Majidia high school in 1936. He was a student of Science in Intermediate college at Calcutta, India and passed in 1938. He got himself admitted for MB in Calcutta Medical College India in 1944.
He did his Diploma in Bacteriology from Manchester UK in 1951 and obtained FRC Path from London in 1963, FCPS (Pakistan) in 1967 and FCPS (Bangladesh) in 1972. He took different postgraduate courses in all branches of pathology. He got Pride of performances award in Medical Science in 1968 and Pakistan National Science Council award in 1970. He worked in different medical institutes of Bangladesh. He was principal of DMCH and later Bangladesh Medical College. He also worked with Arab Medical University of Libya and Indian Army Medical services etc.
He was appointed as Secretary Ministry of Health and Family Welfare from 1974 to 1977. He also served as Dean of the Medical and Dental faculty, Member of the Syndicate and Academic councils of Dhaka University, President of Bangladesh medical and Dental council, Bangladesh Medical Research council, Bangladesh Nursing council, Vice President and Treasurer of College of Physicians and Surgeons Bangladesh. He published more than 50 articles in national and international journals.
He was also Professor Emeritus. He died on 20th August 2012 at Labaid Specialized Hospital and was buried in Banani graveyard. One of the most popular textbooks of Pathology was "Khaleques Practical Pathology". He will be ever remembered as the "Father of Pathology" and for his great achievements. May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace.
