How fast or slow should you inject a medication?

There is no “rush” in injections. Speed depends on the route, drug, and patient condition.
1ī¸âƒŖ Intramuscular (IM) Injection
Speed: Slow and steady
Inject over 10 seconds per mL
Example: 3 mL → about 30 seconds
Why?
Reduces pain
Allows muscle to absorb the drug properly
Prevents tissue damage

2ī¸âƒŖ Subcutaneous (SC) Injection
Speed: Slow
Inject over 5–10 seconds
Why?
Prevents bruising and leakage
Improves absorption (especially insulin)

3ī¸âƒŖ Intradermal (ID) Injection
Speed: Very slow
Inject until a small bleb/wheal forms
Why?
Skin layer is thin
Fast injection can rupture tissue

4ī¸âƒŖ Intravenous (IV) Injection
Speed: Depends on the drug
Some drugs must be given very slowly (e.g., over minutes)
Others may be bolus or infusion

Golden rule:
👉 Always check the drug guideline
âš ī¸ What happens if you inject too fast?
Severe pain
Tissue damage
Drug shock or adverse reactions
Poor drug absorption

✅ Nursing safety tip
“Slow injection = safer injection.”
Always:
Read drug instructions
Observe patient response
Never rush to finish an injection
