A concise history of anthrax through the ages and its situation in Bangladesh with outbreak data
1. Anthrax – Brief Historical Background

Ancient times: Sudden livestock deaths and black skin lesions described in old writings are now believed to be anthrax.

19th century milestone: Robert Koch (1876) proved Bacillus anthracis causes anthrax. This was crucial in establishing the germ theory of disease.

Modern understanding: The bacteria form spores that survive in soil for decades. Infection occurs through contact with sick animals, contaminated products (meat, hides, wool), or inhalation of spores.

2. Main Clinical Forms

Cutaneous anthrax – most common; skin contact with infected animals/products; forms black eschar.

Inhalational anthrax – rare but highly fatal; caused by inhaling spores.

Gastrointestinal anthrax – occurs after eating undercooked infected meat.

3. Anthrax in Bangladesh – Outbreak Data

Major Documented Events

2009–2010 outbreak:

Widespread epidemic across multiple districts.

August–October 2010 alone: 607 suspected human cases reported.

Animal cases also widespread; one study found 104 animal cases between July–September 2010.

2013–2016 outbreaks (7 districts, 26 outbreaks):

1,210 suspected human cutaneous anthrax cases documented.

16 outbreaks recorded 2,121 livestock exposures.

Average human attack rate ~20%.

Meherpur district was worst affected (~744 human cases = 61% of all cases).

Peak outbreak period was usually May–July.

Recent reports:

Dec 2023 (Meherpur): Investigation confirmed cutaneous anthrax after handling/selling infected cattle; meat samples tested positive. Public vaccination and awareness campaigns launched.

Sept 2025 (Rangpur, Pirgacha): Media reports mention anthrax-like symptoms with 100+ suspected human cases; IEDCR collected samples. (Ongoing investigation).

4. Endemic Zones in Bangladesh

Repeated outbreaks mostly reported from Sirajganj, Pabna, Tangail, Kushtia, Meherpur, Rajshahi.

Common triggers: sudden cattle deaths, unsafe carcass disposal, lack of livestock vaccination, and handling/selling of sick animals in rural markets.

5. Key Causes of Recurrence in Bangladesh

Long-lasting spores in soil.

Inadequate livestock vaccination coverage.

Improper disposal of dead cattle (buried shallow, dumped in rivers).

Close human-animal interaction (farmers, butchers, villagers handling meat).

6. Prevention Measures

Mass livestock vaccination in endemic zones.

Safe carcass disposal (burning or deep burial).

Public awareness: avoid slaughtering or eating meat from sick animals.

Rapid response: early case reporting, antibiotic treatment, and community-level education.

১. ফাসাদ সৃষ্টি করোনা (সূরা আল-বাকারা ২:১১)

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا تُفْسِدُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ قَالُوا إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُصْلِحُونَ

বাংলা:
যখন তাদের বলা হয়, ‘তোমরা পৃথিবীতে ফাসাদ সৃষ্টি করোনা,’ তারা বলে, ‘আমরাই তো সংস্কারক।’
(সূরা বাকারা, আয়াত ১১)

English:
And when it is said to them, “Do not cause corruption on the earth,” they say, “We are only reformers.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:11)

২. ঐক্যবদ্ধ হও (সূরা আলে ইমরান ৩:১০৩)

وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا

আর তোমরা আরেকটি বিষয় পছন্দ করো — আল্লাহর তরফ থেকে সাহায্য ও নিকটবর্তী বিজয়! আর মুমিনদের সুসংবাদ দাও।

And [you will obtain] another [favor] that you love — victory from Allah and an imminent conquest; and give good tidings to the believers.

৫. দুঃখ করো না, তোমরাই জয়ী (সূরা আলে ইমরান ৩:১৩৯)

وَلَا تَهِنُوا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا وَأَنتُمُ الْأَعْلَوْنَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

বাংলা:
তোমরা দুর্বল হয়ো না এবং দুঃখ করো না। যদি তোমরা মুমিন হও, তবে তোমরাই শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব লাভ করবে।
(সূরা আলে ইমরান, আয়াত ১৩৯)

English:
So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.
(Surah Aal-E-Imran, 3:139)

"হে মুসলমানগণ! ফাসাদ বন্ধ করো, ঐক্যবদ্ধ হও, কারণ আল্লাহর সাহায্য আসছে। কাফেররা আল্লাহর নিয়ন্ত্রণে রয়েছে, আর মুমিনদের জন্য প্রতিশ্রুত আছে বিজয়। তাই ভয় না করে, সাহস নিয়ে এগিয়ে চল — বিজয় ইনশাআল্লাহ তোমাদেরই হবে!"
