The pharynx is a muscular passage lined with mucous membrane that extends from the nasal cavity to the oesophagus. The upper part, the nasopharynx, connects to the ear via the Eustachian tube and acts as an air passage. The oropharynx, a passage for air and food, lies between the soft palate and the upper edge of the epiglottis. The laryngopharynx lies below the epiglottis and opens into both the larynx for breathing and the oesophagus for swallowing.

The peripheral nervous system is a network of nerves that links the central nervous system and the rest of the body. It has three divisions- autonomic, sensory, and motor. Autonomic nerve fibres, which may join the autonomic nerve ganglia, regulate involuntary actions, such as heartbeat. Sensory nerve fibres receive external stimuli via sense receptors. Motor nerve fibres initiate the relaxation and contraction of the muscles.

In vertebrates, the pancreas gland is located behind the stomach and close to the duodenum. Part of the pancreas produces enzymes, which flow through the pancreatic duct into the duodenum to help digest foods. The pancreas also has groups of cells called islets, which produce two hormones, glucagon and insulin. These hormones, which play an important role in regulating blood sugar levels, pass directly into the bloodstream.
