In the Aranya Parva of the Mahabharata, the Yaksha (nature-spirit) asks Yudhisthira the head of the Pandavas-
'Kimsvin mitram grihesatah(Who is the friend of a householder)?'

Yudhisthira replied-
'The friend of a householder is his spouse.'

The basis for marriage is friendship,not ownership.During the Saptapadi, the sacred seven steps around the fire, the couple vow-

'With these seven steps, you have become my friend.May I deserve your friendship.
May my friendship make me one with you.'

So, marriage is not merely a social bond,
but a spiritual friendship —a sacred journey where two souls grow together in love, trust, and dharma.
