“Could I actually be choosing drama?” she said.

“Am I choosing this rage when all I actually want is calmness?” he said.

How well we deal with stressful situations (or relationships) is dependent upon how we are wired to handle them. And if we grew up in environments full of drama, chaos or something related, then we adapted to it and later look for it, unconsciously. This is because the adaptation to it is known, and we will always go toward what is known over what is unknown. This includes going toward drama, or chaos or rage if they were part of our norm at one point in our lives.

When we start to see the repetitions, or get tired enough of living the challenges - as they are energetically draining - then we might start to question our behaviour. Or maybe feedback and observations from others will help us start to see our patterns. For a wired and dysregulated nervous system, it’s boring to slow down and going toward calmness isn’t easy, because one is wired for more charge and dysregulation. It’s known and familiar.

This gives new meaning to get out of your comfort zone because that comfort zone might have never been comfortable! Awareness is the first step toward change and coupled with more and , we get a chance to choose differently. Change comes by changing the pattern and shifts in awareness are part of breaking patterns, a big part in fact!

It is through our nervous system that we perceive reality, and that reality might not be one of connection and can instead be one of protection that carries over to our relationships, our working life and our relationship with ourself above all.

By learning to work with our nervous system's patterns, we learn to regulate emotions and then we can become our own medicine and better our relationships as a consequence.

Get in touch if you're interested in joining. Some spots are already taken and limited to 10 participants. See all details here on the website: https://www.gettotheorigin.com/8-week-nervous-system-program

This image is brilliant! It explains what I so often talk about with clients - building “capacity” and building our "window of tolerance."

Consciousness of our reactions is a great thing, but it's likely to stay as it is unless you work somatically and with the nervous system, for it is there that you work on the patterns that have been imprinted on the system and repeating like a broken record. As you work somatically, connecting emotions to experiences, capacity is built. This "space" is exactly as the image describes, it allows you to choose your response, or better yet, it allows you to "pause" before you react. And hopefully that means changing your reactions to create a happier reality and happier relationships.

Immediate reactions are linked to imprints in the nervous system. As we learn to regulate our emotions and work WITH the nervous system, instead of AGAINST it (which just reinforces patterns), it doesn't always mean the problems just disappear. What happens is that this "space" is built and you can better tolerate when challenges come. And as you do that, little by little they come less often and/or disappear with time. It's a process but an important one for you and your relationships.

Upcoming 8 week Nervous System Cycle in Brussels

Tuesdays May 9 to July 4th
Place: Shanti Home: Rue Darwin 8; 1190 Brussels

It is through our nervous system that we perceive reality, and that reality might not be one of connection and can instead be one of protection that carries over to our relationships, our working life and our relationship with ourself above all.

The good news is that this can change with somatic awareness and regular work in regulating our emotions by working with the body and not against it.

In this 8-week program, there will be a combination of theory and practice shared.

What happens to your body as you look at photo 1? This likely shows how your body responds to risk and danger. The body response is likely to be subtle, which is why we don’t notice it all the time, but once we become aware of how the body responds to danger, then we can refer to it anytime and learn to trust its subtlety over the mind’s instructions.

And what happens with photo 2? Hopefully the colors and nature allow you to relax and breathe better. Do share your experience in the comments. 👇 Let’s learn together!

How Intergenerational Trauma Impacts Families

“Remaining silent about family pain is rarely an effective strategy for healing it. The suffering will surface again at a later time, often expressing in the fears or symptoms of a later generation.” - Mark Wolynn, Author of "It Didn't Start with You."

**The article talks about individual types of therapies to work on it, including Somatic Therapy, as we know that trauma can live in the body. And 1:1 attention may be what you need most to deal with something like this. In relation to Intergenerational Trauma, however, I know few things better than Family & Systemic Constellations.

I work with both Somatic therapy and Family Constellations. See the website to learn more: https://www.gettotheorigin.com/integrativetherapy

Traumatic experiences your relatives lived through can sometimes be passed down and affect future generations. This is called intergenerational trauma.

No, its such a hard word to say, the hardest of all in fact. And to avoid or ignore the difficulty that goes with this word all together, we opt for the easier version, Yes.

But what comes with the Yes? Maybe more work than you need to take on, maybe agreeing to things you really don’t want later making the need for No even bigger than before.

Confusion often is the time when either Yes or No isn’t clear. And be cautious in the confusion, for it doesn’t necessarily mean Yes. Let it be an indicator to slow down until the clarity comes.
Here’s a short exercise: Spend some time grounding , walking around your room without shoes, or walking around outside barefoot. Massage the bottom of your feet with a ball or the floor itself. Then shake your body (wrists, ankles, jump up and down) as if you’re shaking off any stress or worry. Then rest and scan your body from top to bottom. Sigh several times with sound. Move your head back and down saying Yes each time your chin goes down and notice what comes to mind after you repeat many many times.

What do you have the capacity/space to say Yes to today?
Slowly stop and move the head from side to side and add hip movement with each motion to the side. Now Say No with each head turn to the side.

What comes up as you repeat No? What clarity could come as you give No a chance?

The shape of your life is defined more by the clarity of your no than by the quality of your yes.
