Regular board meetings are essential — not optional — for strong governance.

On 24-25 February, the OECI Board met in Brussels for its periodic Board Meeting, reaffirming the importance of strategic oversight and collective responsibility.

For the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI), regular Board Meetings ensure alignment with our strategic priorities, transparency in decision-making, and steady progress across our initiatives. They provide an opportunity to monitor developments, address challenges proactively, and keep the Organisation focused on its core mission: advancing excellence in cancer care and research across Europe.

Consistency in governance means continuity in impact.

More than 400 professionals gathered on 5 February 2026 at Hospital Clínico San Carlos, demonstrating strong institutional commitment to achieving Comprehensive Cancer Center (CINOC) designation within the OECI Organisation of European Cancer Institutes Accreditation & Designation Programme.

The hospital’s online newspaper has highlighted the OECI Representatives’ Information Session held during the visit of the evaluation team. The event opened with remarks from Hospital Director General César Gómez Derch, who placed the accreditation process in the broader strategic context of the institution.

The session also featured contributions from Pedro Pérez Segura, Head of the Medical Oncology Department, and Simon Oberst, Director of Quality and Accreditation at OECI, who presented the A&D framework and its objectives. The strong attendance clearly reflected the centre’s collective engagement in the process.

Such commitment illustrates how the OECI Accreditation & Designation Programme supports cancer centres in strengthening governance, integration and quality of care, in line with European standards and best practice.

We thank Hospital Clínico San Carlos and all involved professionals for their active participation and dedication to continuous improvement.

World Cancer Day reminds us why we do what we do.

Today is a moment to reflect — but also to reaffirm our shared responsibility to advance cancer research, improve care pathways, and ensure that innovation truly reaches patients.

At OECI Organisation of European Cancer Institutes, collaboration is the foundation of progress. By connecting cancer centres, researchers, clinicians, and patient representatives, we work to strengthen quality, equity, and impact in cancer care across Europe.

On this World Cancer Day, this commitment also takes a very concrete form. Today, CCI4EU, together with the OECI for Patients Working Group, hosted an online roundtable focused on patient involvement and capacity building in cancer research and care — creating space for dialogue, shared learning, and mutual understanding.

On 22 January, the European Coordination and Support Action “Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures for the European Union” (CCI4EU-CSA) hosted a closed Project Forum, bringing together representatives from European initiatives driving the EU Cancer Mission and Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. The event provided a space for experts to exchange ideas, share experiences, and explore opportunities for collaboration across training, research, and oncology care infrastructures.

Participants discussed ongoing projects, common challenges, and ways to strengthen coordination, while also outlining next steps to continue this dialogue at the policy level. A Policy Forum at the European Parliament, tentatively scheduled for April, will bring together stakeholders to align efforts and further advance Europe’s fight against cancer.

The Project Forum highlighted the power of collaboration, innovation, and shared commitment in building a stronger and more connected European oncology community.
