Farmers, advisors, researchers, cooperatives, industry representatives and EU-funded projects are coming together to discuss the future of nutrient management across Europe.

💻 Alexandros is a researcher at AUA’s Smart Farming Technology Group, where he leads projects in digital agriculture and the uptake of digital tools across the agricultural sector.

🎙️ Get to know our speakers!

We’re excited to present Prof. Nicolas Plumeré, representing the LIVESENMAP project, as one of the speakers at the NUTRI-CHECK NET Final Conference.

Prof. Plumeré holds a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Tübingen (Germany) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at NECi (USA), where he worked on nitrate sensing using redox-active enzymes and electrochemistry.

Since 2020, he has been a tenured professor at the Technical University of Munich, where his research focuses on bioelectrocatalytic systems for point-of-use sensing in agriculture — developing technologies that make nutrient monitoring more precise, accessible, and sustainable.

We’re proud to introduce Milan Franssen, Soil Scientist, Agricultural Economist, and Team Leader of the Projects & Innovations team at Delphy, as one of the speakers at the NUTRI-CHECK NET Final Conference.

Milan also serves as Work Package 2 Lead of the project, where he plays a key role in developing tools and methods to enhance sustainable nutrient management across Europe.

Within Delphy, Milan manages a team of project managers who initiate innovative collaboration projects connecting farmers, agronomists, researchers, supply chain partners, and public entities. These initiatives promote practical research and knowledge transfer, accelerating the adoption of agricultural innovations in the field.

We are delighted to welcome Sara Johansson, Senior Policy Officer for Water at the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), as a speaker at the NUTRI-CHECK NET Final Conference.

Sara will contribute to the session “Innovative Governance Models to Boost Nutrient Recycling,” representing the NENUPHAR project.

At the EEB, the largest network of environmental civil society organisations in Europe — with over 190 members across 41 countries — Sara’s work focuses on water protection and the implementation of key EU environmental policies, including the Water Framework Directive, the Nitrates Directive, and the Water Resilience Strategy.

Her policy expertise and commitment to sustainability play a vital role in advancing governance models that strengthen nutrient recycling, bridging the gap between environmental protection and agricultural innovation.

We’re pleased to introduce David Wall, leader of Work Package 3 “Evaluation of Crop Nutrition Decision Tools” within the NUTRI-CHECK NET project, and one of the key speakers at the Final Conference.
David is Head of the Teagasc Crops, Environment and Land Use Research Centre at Johnstown Castle, Ireland, where he leads efforts to update the National Nutrient Advice for Grassland and Arable Crops.

His research focuses on building resilient soils, improving organic manure efficiency, and developing soil-specific nutrient advice to make farming more productive and sustainable.

Francesca is a Research & Development Engineer working at the forefront of agronomy, pedology, and nutrient management, where she drives innovation in crop modeling, fertilization strategies, soil health, and agricultural technology.

Her work connects scientific research, policy, and regulation, advancing sustainable farming practices across Europe. She leads strategic initiatives integrating crop models and sensor technologies to optimise precision nutrient management and plays a key role in cross-disciplinary EU-funded projects focused on decision-support tools for farmers and agri-food stakeholders.

A strong advocate for science-based and data-driven agriculture, Francesca contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving nutrient efficiency — combining technical innovation, policy insight, and field application to shape a more sustainable future for European farming.

We’re honoured to welcome Professor Spyros Fountas, Dean of the School of Environment and Agricultural Engineering at the Agricultural University of Athens, as our Closing Session Speaker at the NUTRI-CHECK NET Final Conference.

Prof. Fountas is a leading figure in precision agriculture and smart farming technologies, with a distinguished academic and research career. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Smart Agricultural Technology (Elsevier) and previously led Computers and Electronics in Agriculture for seven years.

With over 250 scientific publications and the coordination of seven EU-funded projects (including Smart-AKIS, GATES, OPTIMA, BEATLES, ICAERUS, Oper-8, and SmartDroplets), Prof. Fountas has played a key role in advancing digital innovation in European agriculture.

NUTRI-CHECK NET is a European project funded under Horizon Europe and UK Research and Innovation, bringing together researchers, advisors, farmers, policymakers, and industry representatives from across Europe to promote better nutrient use efficiency and sustainable fertilisation practices. The project has focused on three key crops (corn, potato, and wheat), testing and improving nutrient management strategies across diverse agro-climatic regions. Its main results include the NUTRI-CHECK NET Platform, designed to facilitate knowledge exchange and advisory support, and a comprehensive Cost–Benefit Analysis (CBA) to assess the economic and environmental performance of different fertilisation practices.

The Final Conference will gather experts, practitioners, and decision-makers to discuss the future of nutrient management in Europe.

The event will conclude with a panel discussion on Bridging Sectors for a Better Future, reflecting on the role of governance, innovation, and collaboration in achieving sustainable nutrient cycles.

We’re excited to welcome Georgios Charvalis, representing the QuantiFarm project, as a speaker at the NUTRI-CHECK NET Final Conference.

Georgios will take part in the session “Quantifying Digital Impact: The QuantiFarm Toolkit”, showcasing how data-driven approaches can evaluate and enhance the real impact of digital technologies in European agriculture.

With an MSc in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation for Environmental Modelling and Management, Georgios brings expertise in GIS, remote sensing, and spatiotemporal data analysis. He has over four years of experience in technical management across national and European projects in the environmental and agricultural sectors.

Currently, he focuses on developing data-driven methodologies to support sustainable and evidence-based productivity growth in EU agriculture — helping bridge the gap between technology, science, and practical application.
