More research demonstrating better long term outcomes (5 years) if a pre-rehabilitation programme is completed in the time after ACL injury, and importantly, before an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction surgery is performed. So for athletes and patients alike, please take the time to speak to your surgeon and physio about this. If this has not been discussed then press the issue and ask for this pre-habilitation period before considering surgery.
Remember, that having ruptured your ACL, this alone does not mean that you automatically require surgery to replace the ligament. Many factors will determine whether you require surgery or conservative management. So please speak to your healthcare providers about all options before making a more informed decision. This applies to all musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, regarding getting informed about your injury and the different options moving forwards.
Treatment with exercise therapy alone was a prognostic factor for less knee symptoms compared with early reconstruction plus exercise therapy
