At the European Cancer Summit 2025, Europe’s cancer community confronted a changing geopolitical and financial landscape with practical solutions and forward-looking strategies.

With negotiations for the upcoming EU long-term budget on the horizon, ECO’s Focus Topic Networks unveiled five major publications designed to move from commitment to concrete action, including:
✅ harnessing AI responsibly;
✅ improving cervical cancer screening;
✅ advancing survivorship policy; and
✅ optimising EU research investment.

The European Cancer Summit Report 2025 brings together all of these new releases, alongside the discussions that shaped them.

Liver cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Europe, with most cases caused by viral hepatitis. 👈

Tools to eliminate hepatitis exist, yet an estimated 4 in 10 Europeans are living with the disease unknowingly, having never been diagnosed. 🩺

To accelerate action, the WorldHepatitisAlliance, in partnership with EASL, ELPA and ECO, are organising a hybrid event at the European Parliament next month. 🗣️

Together we’ll discuss how to improve cancer prevention in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (2028-2034)! 🧩

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is still often discussed as ‘just a women’s health issue’.

Not true. ❌

HPV can cause cancers in anyone. In men, it’s linked to cancers of the head and neck, a**s, and p***s. About 1 in 5 men globally have a current high-risk HPV infection, triggering an estimated 180,000 new HPV cancer cases each year. 👈

This is why gender-neutral vaccination is such a key public health strategy. Most European countries have already moved in this direction, but some still limit protection to girls only.

Reducing HPV-related cancers means protecting everyone. When both women and men are vaccinated, community protection increases and more deadly cancers can be prevented. 💉

What have you heard about HPV vaccines? 💉

Some people question their safety, but the HPV vaccine has been used in Europe for decades and has been proven safe and effective, time and again. 👈

Today, more than 40 European countries are running national HPV vaccination programmes, and the vast majority of them include both girls and boys – ensuring everyone can be protected. 🌍

The evidence is clear: where proper vaccination and screening practices are well implemented, cancers caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) are sharply reduced.

Help spread the word.

In this interactive workshop, participants will work together to imagine and build personas representing key actors, such as:

💻 Digital infrastructure operators and analysts
🔬 Researchers
🥼 Healthcare professionals
🤝 Policymakers

The goal is to better understand their motivations, challenges and needs. 🔎

AI has the potential to transform cancer care, but only if we ask ourselves the right questions now.

ECO’s Young Cancer Professionals are joining forces with European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) to bring you: ‘Emerging technologies in cancer care – AI and digital health tools. What young professionals need to know’

As cancer continues to affect millions across Europe, understanding both the promise and the risk of artificial intelligence is essential. That’s why expert voices from clinical practice, research and global health are coming together to explore

➡️ how AI can advance oncology
➡️ what are its barriers, questions, and real-world challenges, and
➡️ how is the EU addressing the associated risks and responsibilities

Join us for this timely discussion!
