“People with low vagal tone do not recover as quickly after safety is restored. If you have low vagal tone, you may feel stuck in high or low activation for a long time after a stressful incident has ended, or even flip-flop between those two up and down states.”

“Stimulating the vagus nerve when we are alone can help us feel calm in the moment, but it will not change vagal tone over time. Our vagus nerve needs the safe/calm influence of human and/or animal nervous systems to change tone.”

Vagal tone is the ability of the ventral vagus nerve to regulate the heart beat. “Cardiac vagal tone" is measured by tracking heart-rate and breathing rate at the same time. The heart-rate speeds up a little when we breathe in, and slows down a little when we breathe out. The bigger the differe

Le toucher, quelle chose étrange...

There are two types of touch; quick touch and slow touch.

Quick touch runs along big, thick, fast A-fibre nerves that are like motorways. Slow touch is different, it goes along slow, thin, C-fibre nerves. C-fibres are more like country roads and cycle paths, and they are central to feeling and consciousness, carrying the essential signals that let us know we’re alive.

Slow, gentle, meditative, ‘relational’ touch conveys powerful emotions. It’s focused on the whole person and all their stories. This type of touch that helps us connect to feelings of aliveness and joy.

If it’s hard to feel, it’s hard to heal. Slow touch can be levered to connect to feeling states that are often hidden, rarely simple and often scary, which is incredibly useful in resolving pain, anxiety and trauma. It can help us move from fear, contraction and isolation to play, expansion and community.

This.

I regularly have mothers coming to me to heal from the birth of their baby.

And while each birth story is unique, there is a common theme amongst all traumatic births.

"I felt scared and powerless and unsupported."

Feeling scared, powerless and unsupported is, in itself, the definition of trauma.

Before I go further, I want to say clearly that nurses, obstetricians and surgeons are incredible people, saving lives every day and I'm very grateful for their work.
This post is not about blaming them.
It's rather about bringing awareness about how traumatisation happens and how (easily) we can avoid it.

“Your _________ might be trauma response.”

This is not a shaming or blaming statement.

This does not mean you need to stop the behavior or habit.

This simply means the behavior began out of your body’s best attempt to protect you.

It might still be the best way for your body to protect you.

Or it might not.

Only you know.

No one has the right to rush you into stopping a behavior that is a trauma response.

(Please note I’m talking about behaviors that aren’t harmful to others. If your trauma responses are harming others, that needs to shift immediately to other less harmful strategies.)

Some trauma responses should actually be celebrated.

You made it through that hard time! You survived!

Wow, look at this brilliant mechanism your body used to keep you safe. This trauma response has served you well!

Your trauma responses are not proof of a character flaw. Your trauma responses need not be a secret shame.

Your trauma responses are proof that your body is on your side all the time, trying to protect you from the big traumatic world.

The next time someone critically questions me: Do you think your is a trauma response?

I want to answer, “Maybe it is, but my path to healing is not in rejecting my trauma responses. On my path, I honor my trauma responses so that I can be a fully integrated whole person.”

On a related but separate note, let's remember that genetic neurodivergence exists, and that many non-normative behaviors and habits are not trauma responses.
