When Alice was diagnosed with epilepsy as a medical student, she feared her life would change forever. Instead, medical technologies, such as electroencephalogram (EEG), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), helped uncover the cause of her seizures and gave her a path forward.

Today, she’s not only a doctor but an advocate for colleagues living with invisible disabilities, proving that epilepsy does not define her.

Jacquie Smithson’s journey with multiple sclerosis (MS) began 30 years ago with blurred vision, the first sign of a disease that would change her life.

From early diagnostic tests using advanced medical technologies like MRI scans, lumbar punctures, and visual evoked potentials, to treatments that help her manage her symptoms today, medical technologies have played a crucial role in her story.

Now a consultant gastroenterologist, Jacquie continues to inspire others by sharing her experience, advocating for visibility, and raising awareness through incredible initiatives, including cycling 1,000 miles across Great Britain to support the MS community.

MedTech Europe’s mission is to make innovative medical technology available to more people, while helping healthcare systems move towards a sustainable path. MedTech Europe encourages policies that help the medical technology industry meet Europe’s growing healthcare needs and expectations. It also promotes medical technology’s value for Europe focusing on innovation and stakeholder relations, using economic research and data, communications, industry events and training sessions.

MedTech Europe started as an alliance in October 2012 formed by two organisations – EDMA, representing the European in vitro diagnostic industry; and Eucomed, representing the European medical devices industry.

Promoting a balanced policy environment

MedTech Europe engages with EU regulators, politicians and other decision-makers to help shape policies to promote innovation for our growing healthcare needs and expectations.
