Burnout among healthcare professionals is reaching a critical point – a hidden crisis that is affecting healthcare systems across Europe in delivering quality care to patients.

As European populations age and the burden of chronic disease continues to rise, demand for surgical interventions is set to increase significantly in the coming years. At a time when we urgently need more surgeons and healthcare professionals, the risk of losing them to burnout threatens the resilience and long term sustainability of our health systems.

In this Policy Views, Francois Gaudemet, President, Surgery EMEA, for Johnson & Johnson MedTech, reflects on why burnout must be treated as a challenge for healthcare systems, not just an individual one - and how we can do better to support surgeons and healthcare professionals.

On , Lynsey’s story is a reminder of the important role of early detection and diagnostics in improving cancer outcomes.

Lynsey didn't give much thought about the freckle on her back, as it wasn’t painful. What she didn’t expect was a melanoma diagnosis.

Thanks to an AI-powered skin cancer detection technology, her cancer was identified early, allowing doctors to act before it could spread further. Today, Lynsey is a strong advocate for regular skin checks and early screening.

Despite growing awareness, avoidable harm remains one of the most persistent challenges facing healthcare, highlighting the limits of systems that respond only after something has gone wrong.

As the focus increasingly shifts towards prevention, attention turns to how safety can be designed into healthcare from the outset, through leadership, culture, data and system-wide approaches rather than reactive fixes.

In our latest Policy Views, Greg Quinn, Director of Public Policy & Advocacy for BD UK & Ireland, reflects on the need for a systems-based approach to patient safety and explores the critical role health technology can play as a partner in building safer, more resilient health systems for patients and professionals alike.

Medical technologies are all around us — improving lives in countless ways and helping people live longer, healthier lives.

But what exactly is medical technology?

➡️ Medical technologies are products, services, or solutions designed to save and enhance people’s lives. They support us at every stage of care — from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and long-term management. Broadly, they fall into three main categories:

❇️ Medical Devices (MDs): products, services or solutions that prevent, diagnose, monitor, treat and care for people;

❇️ In vitro diagnostics (IVDs): non-invasive tests used on biological samples to determine the status of a person’s health;

❇️ Digital health: tools and services that use information and communication technologies to improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and management of a person’s health and lifestyle.

Explore our latest Facts & Figures to learn more about the more than 2,000,000 medical technologies available today and the value the MedTech sector brings to Europe’s citizens and health systems. 👉 https://bit.ly/48VD3q8
