Yin yoga is a slow-paced practice with postures that are held for longer periods of time, at least two minutes and up to ten minutes or even more, depending on the posture. Yin yoga postures target mainly the hips, the back of the legs (hamstrings), the lower back and the spine. Yin yoga poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body—the tendons, fascia, and ligaments—with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. Yin yoga is a more meditative approach to yoga and it aims at cultivating awareness and inner silence. It can be seen as a way to meditate and to bring awareness to the body and the sensations.

Yin yoga is practiced using props to support the body during the postures. In Yin yoga the stretch is passive, the time and the gravity work to open up the body. It is a practice of patience and acceptance. When we learn to stay for 5 minutes or more in a challenging posture staying calm and present, we learn to do the same out of the mat.

In a world that is increasingly yang, more yin energy is needed and the practice of Yin yoga can help us reach a state of balance between yin and yang energies in our life.

The practice of Yin yoga is a gift, a deeply healing experience.
