New research from the University of Auckland backs up what recovery communities have been saying for years: you can’t punish addiction into submission.

Drug treatment courts reduce re-offending by combining accountability with treatment, structure, and support. People who go through these programs are far less likely to end up back in the system.

Recovery in action is treating addiction as a health issue, addressing trauma, and giving people real pathways forward. When systems focus on healing instead of cycling people through punishment, lives and communities actually change.

Opinion: What makes the drug treatment court model powerful is the wraparound support given to the high-risk, high-needs offenders, writes Dr Katherin Doolin.
