Another beautiful day to research this week looking for 17th century gunsmiths. This time in Liege at the Grand Curtius museum. Stepping back in time at the Curtius Palace and surrounding architecture.

An early start this morning for another brilliant research day. This time at the Archives of Arlon to collect population register entries. Today was a research day at the Belgian National Archives, and I think I may have found a new favourite source: the Central Register of (Belgian) War Refugees.

I tracked down what I needed for my client, and then, just for fun, I searched my married name. Looking for any distant relations. I came across an Emma Devroey (no relation so far) with a Belgian address in Leuven, and in 1915 a UK address in Pangbourne, Reading.

Coincidentally I emigrate as Emma Devroey from Reading to Leuven. I love researching.

Visited Bouillon Castle today 🏰 inspired by reading The Heron Legacy by Leona Francombe — what an incredible place. I was so excited. Standing where Godfrey of Bouillon once ruled, with views over the Semois River, felt like stepping back in time. The castle walls, hidden passages, the falconry display and the cheese making all brought history to life. Definitely a must-see!
