✨ Yoga and Quality of Life in Older Adults: A Study within an EU Erasmus Project ✨
🎙 Talk by Antonietta Rozzi
Western societies, especially in Europe, are aging due to lower birth rates and longer life expectancy. In Italy, for example, 22% of the population is over 65, roughly matching the European average. This high percentage of older adults poses social, economic, and health challenges, as well as impacts on well-being and quality of life.
With age, many functions decline: movements become slower and more limited, social life slows down, mental functions decrease, and cognitive abilities change. Yoga can help.
The practice of asanas and breathing techniques improves motor skills and helps combat hypertension, osteoporosis, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, anxiety, and depression. These practices also support better sleep and recovery after exertion.
This research, conducted jointly by Sarva Yoga International (Italy) and GNSPY (Romania) within an EU Erasmus project, has shown significant improvements in the quality of life of older adults.
Antonietta Rozzi has been practicing and teaching yoga for over 45 years. She has led the EUY for 12 years, contributed to the creation of a European core training program for yoga teachers, and teaches yoga at the University of Bologna and Bolzano/Bressanone. She is President of Sarva Yoga International and ASSOYOGA Italia, Honorary President of the Italian Yoga Federation, and a member of the WHO/AYUSH Traditional Medicine Commission. In 2019, she became the first Westerner to receive the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Promotion and Development of Yoga, personally presented by the Indian Prime Minister.
