La méthode enseignée durant les ateliers de massage parents-bébés par les instructrices et instructeurs certifié(e)s et adhérent(e)s à l'AFMB, comprend aussi bien le massage suédois et indien que des techniques de réflexologie et quelques mouvements issus du yoga, afin que cet ensemble soit bénéfique pour l’enfant.

En 1992, Tiffany Field, une psychologue a fondé le Touch Research Institute à la Faculté de Médecine de l’université de Miami aux Etats Unis, le seul centre au monde à être consacré à l’étude du toucher et à ses applications scientifiques et médicales. Depuis 20 ans, la chercheuse s’intéresse tout particulièrement à l’impact du massage thérapeutique sur le développement de l’enfant. En plus, elle a démontré l'impact du toucher sur le développement des bébés prématurés (47% de poids en plus par rapport aux autres bébés stabilisés).
