EUFAMI is an international NGO based in Belgium committed to improving the care for and welfare of people with mental ill health. Our mission is to represent at the European level all family members of persons that are affected by mental ill health and to protect their rights and interests. We would like to see family carers acknowledged on an equal footing with professional staff and mental health care services in the community should be adequate to enable family members of people with mental ill health to choose whether to become informal caregivers. EUFAMI has a number of programmes that support people that are affected by severe mental ill health and the organisations representing them across Europe. We enable our member organisations to act jointly at a European level, combining our efforts and sharing experience with each other.

A research project's impact is measured not just by its findings, but by its reach. At the FAMILY Project EU meeting in Barcelona, Spain Nina Karguth masterfully presents the strategy behind Work Package 9.

In today's digital world, social media is one of the unparalleled channel for engaging the general public, demystifying science, and ensuring our work on family mental health creates real-world change.

This WP goes beyond traditional publishing. It’s about:
🔹 Strategic Communication to shape the narrative.
🔹 Effective Training to empower stakeholders.
🔹 Guideline Development to translate research into practice.
🔹 Digital Dissemination to connect directly with families, caregivers and the general public.

EUFAMI is proud to assist with these efforts, ensuring that every breakthrough and guideline reaches those who need it most.

📝 This week in Barcelona, the hashtag FAMILY Project EU continues to drive critical conversations. We have the privilege of attending a profound presentation by Signe Mežinska on the ethical aspects and social consequences of inter-generational transmission of risk and prediction of mental illness.

Hosted as part of Work Package 8 of the project, this discussion is at the heart of our mission. As EUFAMI, we are proud to support the development of this crucial work package, alongside our efforts in dissemination and communication of the project itself.

The ability to predict mental health conditions across generations presents not just scientific challenges, but profound ethical questions. How do we balance knowledge with potential stigma? What are the implications for family identity and autonomy? Signe's work is essential in navigating these complex issues to ensure that scientific advancement always prioritises the well-being of individuals and families.

📕📕📕 "When the Brain Gets Sick" 📕📕📕

"When the Brain Gets Sick" is a children’s book written with the aim of increasing understanding and awareness of mental and neurological illnesses among children. Authored by Professor Klas Kullander, an expert in neuroscience, and Associate Professor Åsa Konradsson-Geuken, a researcher in pharmacology, President of Schizofreniförbundet, and newly elected EUFAMI President, the book introduces children to the complexities of brain disorders through accessible language and vivid illustrations.

The story explores what can happen when the brain doesn’t function as expected, helping children understand how such conditions may affect thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationships. The book creates a safe and engaging space for dialogue between children and the adults around them: parents, teachers, and caregivers.

One of the core goals of the book is to reduce stigma and break the silence that often surrounds mental illness and brain-related conditions. Early education and openness are key to fostering empathy, acceptance, and long-term mental health literacy. By using the medium of a children’s book, the authors hope to make these topics not only understandable, but also emotionally resonant for younger audiences.

"When the Brain Gets Sick" aspires to shape a more inclusive and supportive society, one where understanding the brain and its illnesses is part of everyday knowledge, and where no one feels alone in their experience.

At the moment, the book can be purchased in English by EUFAMI at the cost of €15 (including shipping & handling). If you want your own copy, or seek for more information, please contact us at comms.admin@eufami.net.

Dr. Åsa Konradsson-Geukendelivered a powerful and timely message at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) Congress in Amsterdam: Ensuring the carer and patient voice is heard!

True progress in is not achieved through scientific discovery alone. It requires meaningful partnerships with those who live it every day. Integrating the perspectives of carers and patients at every stage of research and care, from study design to treatment implementation, is essential.

Progress is measured not only by breakthroughs in the lab, but by the impact we make on the lives of those we serve.
