This is Gabriel (co-founder CuradisUSA), ready to help assist David with free endoscopies! 🙌🏽

About 30% of their instrumentals in 2020 & 2021 were performed pro-bono for those who were impacted economically by the COVID-19 pandemic 🦠 and patients without insurance. So inspiring! There is power in kindness.

Have a wonderful week!

180 HOURS in 5 weeks! 🙌🏽
“My personal record of volunteering so far. 🏆 I love to indulge in the culture of a faraway country during volunteering, but the COVID-19 pandemic made me reconsider the options of volunteering as a Speech-Language Pathologist... That’s when I decided to give back to our local community and volunteer at Antwerp University Hospital in Belgium. 🇧🇪

Surrounded by great professionals and diverse opportunities to learn and expand my clinical skillset, I truly enjoyed those 5 weeks! I am thankful beyond words for this experience.”

Swipe to see some impressions! ⬅️⬅️

PS; I really tried to make some pictures and keep you all posted, but in Belgium this was more of a challenge! We are not used to capture our days at work, in comparison with many southern cultures. 😅

The past few months we have been reading and posting multiple testimonials by colleagues in healthcare, all giving their best to stay strong. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with our emotions in challenging times. Therefore, it’s important to recognize and identify your emotions in a moment to improve your understanding of a situation, and of yourself. Some tips:

▪️When you are feeling a particularly strong emotion, find 4 or 5 words that describe the way you feel.
▪️Figure out what prompted you to feel like that and why. You’ll learn a lot about yourself by doing this regularly.

👉🏽 How to handle negative emotions?

It’s inevitable that we are all going to feel sad every now and again. It’s impossible to be happy all of the time. Whenever you are feeling down, it’s important to remember that these feelings are not permanent. They are fleeting and they will pass. Don’t ignore them, ride them out and you’ll see the light on the other
side soon enough.

⌛️ Take breaks
Take 5-minute intervals throughout the day, step away from what you’re doing and take some time to yourself. When you return to the task at hand you’ll feel refreshed and ready to keep going.

🥗 Eat well
If you fuel your body correctly, you’ll feel stronger, happier and your
performance at work will improve.

🌿 Nature
Get outside in the fresh air as regularly
as possible. Try do this without any distractions such as a mobile phone. Emerge yourself in your surroundings and escape reality for a few minutes.

July 2017, Katja was invited to visit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Mário Palmério University Hospital in Uberaba, Brazil. 🌎

SLP Aline invented an improvement for the nurses to guard the silence. Every day a nurse becomes the ‘Guardiã do Silêncio’ to assure a quiet and peaceful environment for the newborns. 👶🏽 You can recognize this role by the button (swipe left to see it! ➡️) and a special coat.

Katja saved this souvenir from an inspirational volunteering day.

“I'm Mariana Firmeza, a Brazilian oncology nurse. I work at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia in Fortaleza / Ceará, specifically in the outpatient clinic for pain and palliative care.

Oncology is one of the specialties that, despite the pandemic, has no indication of suspending care, except in some cases and according to the benefit risk assessment. We did not stop the service, we reduced the professionals' scales and advised that the companions / caregivers without flu-like symptoms should attend the service, so as not to interrupt the treatment with opioids.

I am the coordinator of the pain and palliative care clinic and the most difficult decision was to see the other clinics stop their activities and have to keep ours, for the benefit of our cancer patient. Knowing that discontinuing opioid treatment would lead to additional risks.

I can never forget that we also lost patients in this difficult period. Many stopped going to the consultations for fear of becoming infected, others who live in the countryside were unable to get transportation to continue the treatment. Some patients also reported that they became infected, others that they lost close family members and this is very challenging for the multiprofessional team.

Cancer cannot wait...

We live in difficult circumstances where the use of PPE’s and hand hygiene becomes more frequent, in addition physical contact is being avoided. Even so, some professionals on the team were infected by COVID-19, leaving the service.

However, we must celebrate our victories and keep hope for better days for those who deal with cancer on a daily basis.”

We will share personal testimonials by healthcare professionals worldwide, to get insight in the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carolina is an SLP, specializing in swallowing difficulties and paediatrics in Portugal.
“In my hospital we always kept working with inpatiens and the last couple of weeks we started to receive outpatients. Delivering therapy with lots of hygiene measures such as wearing gloves, masks & gowns. We have to consider that every patient could be a positive COVID-19 case...

It’s very difficult to work with all this measures, specially for us SLPs! While we are treating patients with aphasia or other communication disorders, the mask and the visors can be a serious disadvantage. For our dysphagia patients we have to take extra precaution, because most of our procedures are aerosolizing ones!

Our patients are often at the hospital for a long time and visitors have been prohibited since de beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. They definitely make our days and give us the courage to keep going!” 🍀
