Mesotherapie is een moderne, weinig ingrijpende behandeling die steeds vaker toegepast wordt bij sport- en recreatiepaarden.

Paardenastma (voorheen RAO/COPD) is een chronische ontsteking van de diepe luchtwegen. Het ontstaat door irritatie door stof, schimmelsporen, pollen of ammoniak in de stal. Deze prikkels zorgen voor vernauwde luchtwegen en ophoping van slijm, waardoor het paard minder zuurstof kan opnemen.

🔍 Hoe herken je het?
Let op deze veelvoorkomende symptomen:
- Regelmatig hoesten, vooral bij het werk
- Versnelde of moeilijke ademhaling
- Neusuitvloeiing
- Verminderde conditie of sneller vermoeid

🩺 Diagnose
- Klinisch onderzoek met auscultatie van de longen
- Endoscopie
- Tracheaal aspiraat en/of BAL (spoelmonster) om ontstekingscellen te beoordelen

💊 Behandeling & management
Astma is goed onder controle te houden mits de juiste aanpak:
- Stofarme huisvesting en goed geventileerde stallen
- Nat of gestoomd hooi
- Medicatie om de crisis te overbruggen
- Vernevelen kan helpen bij sommige gevallen

Equine asthma (formerly RAO/COPD) is a chronic inflammation of the lower airways. It is often triggered by irritation from dust, mold spores, pollen, or ammonia in the stable. These irritants cause airway narrowing and mucus accumulation, reducing the horse’s ability to take in oxygen.

🔍 How do you recognize it?
Watch for these common symptoms:
- Frequent coughing, especially during exercise
- Rapid or labored breathing
- Nasal discharge
- Reduced stamina or quicker fatigue
- Decreased performance under saddle

🩺 Diagnosis
A thorough diagnostic work-up:
- Clinical examination and lung auscultation
- Endoscopy
- Tracheal wash and/or BAL to assess inflammatory cells

💊 Treatment & management
Asthma can be well-managed with the right approach:
- Low-dust housing and well-ventilated stables
- Soaked or steamed hay
- Medication to control acute flare-ups
- Nebulization is needed in some cases

✂️ 𝗚𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲 – een veilige optie onder steriele omstandigheden🐴

💉 Wat is het verschil met een open castratie?
Bij beide operaties wordt de zaadstreng zorgvuldig afgebonden. Bij een open castratie blijft de wonde open om natuurlijk te draineren.
Bij een gesloten castratie daarentegen wordt het onderhuidsweefsel en de huid volledig gehecht, waardoor de kans op infectie of bloeding kleiner is. Dit type ingreep gebeurt enkel in de kliniek, onder steriele omstandigheden en onder volledige narcose.

🩺 Wanneer kiezen voor een gesloten castratie?
👉 Bij hengsten ouder dan 3 jaar
👉 Wanneer de testikels diep in het lieskanaal liggen
👉 Bij hengsten met één of beide testikels niet volledig ingedaald (klophengsten)
👉 Wanneer extra hygiëne of controle gewenst is, bijvoorbeeld bij waardevolle sportpaarden

️ ⚕️ Voordelen van een gesloten castratie:
- Minder risico op nabloedingen, infecties of hernia
- Sneller en comfortabeler herstel
- Steriel en gecontroleerd verloop
- Ideaal voor klinische opvolging en monitoring

🌿 Nazorg in de kliniek:
Na de operatie blijft het paard meestal een dag ter observatie. Daarna volgt thuis een periode van rust en gecontroleerde beweging.

✂️ 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – a safe option under sterile conditions 🐴

💉 What is the difference with an open castration?
In both procedures the spermatic cord is carefully ligated. In an open castration, the wound is left open to drain naturally.
During a closed castration, the subcutis and skin are fully closed, reducing the risk of infection or bleeding. This procedure is only performed in the clinic under sterile conditions and under general anesthesia.

🩺 When to choose a closed castration?
👉 in older stallions
👉 when the testicles are located deep in the inguinal canal
👉 in stallions with one or both testicles not fully descended (cryptorchids)
👉 when extra hygiene or control is desired, for example in valuable sport horses

⚕️ Benefits of a closed castration:
- lower risk of bleeding, infection and hernia
- faster and more comfortable recovery
- sterile and controlled procedure
- ideal for clinical follow-up and monitoring

🌿 Post-operative care in the clinic:
After the procedure, the horse usually stays for one day under observation. After that, a period of rest and controlled exercise at home follows.

👀🏨 Looking for a new team member!

💥Dibber werd naar Het Bokt gebracht met een grote wonde aan het achterbeen. Tijdens het onderzoek voelden we een volledige sectie van de diepe buigpees. Op radiografie zagen we ook een fractuur van het laterale griffelbeentje. 🩻

👩‍⚕️Tijdens de operatie werden de losse fragmenten verwijderd en de wonde grondig gereinigd en gehecht. Er werd een gips geplaatst op het onderbeen om de wonde, maar vooral de pees tijd te geven om zich te herstellen.

😵‍💫Hoewel Dibber nogal nerveus was op stal, verliep het herstel goed. Na 2 weken werd de gips gewisseld onder algemene anesthesie. Nog eens 2 weken later werd deze gips verwijderd en de draadjes werden uit de wonde gehaald. Met een stevig steunverband kan Dibber rustig aan de rest van zijn revalidatie beginnen. 🐎

⁉️Wist je dat het paard oorspronkelijk 5 tenen had, net als wij? Van de 1e en 5e teen is niets meer terug te vinden. Het mediale en laterale griffelbeentje zijn alles wat nog rest van de 2e en de 4e teen. Een paard loopt dus enkel op zijn middelvinger!
