📖 Students attending Bulgarian language courses at IOM Bulgaria marked Bulgaria’s National Day – March 3rd, by laying flowers at the monument of Vasil Levski in Sofia. 🇧🇬🌹

Through this gesture, they expressed their respect for Bulgarian history, culture, and values. For many of them, learning the Bulgarian language is not only part of their integration, but also a way to better understand the country and its traditions. 🇧🇬

🧵On 1 March, Bulgaria welcomes spring with Baba Marta — a cherished tradition symbolising renewal, health, and hope. On this day, people exchange red and white amulets known as martenitsi, wishing one another “Chestita Baba Marta” for happiness and well-being. The intertwined threads represent the balance between strength and purity, life and new beginnings.

🎨 In the Safe Zones managed by IOM Bulgaria at the Registration and Reception Centres in Sofia, unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) marked the occasion with a creative martenitsa workshop. Together with IOM’s social workers and cultural mediators, the children learned about the meaning behind the tradition and the symbolism of the red and white threads.

✂️ With yarn, beads, and plenty of imagination, they crafted their own martenitsi — each one unique. The workshop became more than a creative activity; it was a shared moment of cultural exchange, connection, and belonging.

🌿 As the first signs of spring appear, these small handmade symbols carry a simple but powerful message: hope travels with us.

🇪🇺 These activities are implemented within the framework of the projects “Provision of support to asylum seekers in Bulgaria” and “Support for Unaccompanied Minors Accommodated in Safe Zones,” funded under the National AMIF Programme 2021–2027 with the financial support of the European Union.

🌍🇧🇬 Civic Orientation Courses for refugees from Ukraine held in Burgas 🇺🇦

On 26 February, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Bulgaria delivered two civic orientation courses in Burgas, supporting refugees from Ukraine in navigating life in their host country.

During the session, participants received essential information about:
▪️ Rights and responsibilities of migrants in Bulgaria
▪️ Access to healthcare, education, social services, and employment
▪️ Residence procedures and administrative requirements
▪️ Social norms, equality, and violence prevention
▪️ Bulgaria’s history, culture, and traditions

Following the group session, IOM’s legal expert provided both group and individual consultations, addressing a wide range of questions. Participants sought guidance on applying for humanitarian status in Bulgaria, the differences between humanitarian status and temporary protection, and various legal matters concerning their stay and future after being displaced by the war in Ukraine.

In addition, IOM’s cultural mediators offered individual consultations related to the social, administrative and healthcare assistance provided by IOM for migrants in the Burgas region. Beneficiaries received practical information and guidance on accessing available support services tailored to their specific needs.

🤝The active participation and numerous questions highlighted the continued need for reliable, accessible information and legal support. Through these sessions, IOM Bulgaria aims to empower beneficiaries with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions and strengthen their social inclusion.

🇪🇺The courses are implemented under the project “Migrant Information Centres – Support to social inclusion of migrants in Bulgaria,” funded by the National AMIF Programme 2021–2027, with the financial support of the European Union and the budget of the Republic of Bulgaria.
