👋 Meet Professor Hisham Mehanna!
🔬 Prof. Mehanna is a distinguished leader in head and neck surgery and interdisciplinary research. At the University of Birmingham, he serves as Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Interdisciplinary Research, Director of the Institute for Global Innovation, and Chair of Head and Neck Surgery. Clinically, he is a Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham, specializing in complex thyroid and parathyroid cases.
1 Professor Mehanna is globally recognized for his pioneering research published in journals like The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. His landmark PET-NECK trial established a new standard of care, sparing 80% of advanced head and neck cancer patients from unnecessary neck dissection surgery. He also led the major De-ESCALaTE HPV trial, and his research has attracted over £17 million in grants.
Internationally, he presides over the Head and Neck Cancer International Group (HNCIG), a consortium uniting 20 national research networks to standardize global research efforts. He is also a past president of the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists.
