تسوس الرضع فهو فقدان بنيان السن الناجم عن نوم الطفل أثناء الرضاعة، فالحليب يحتوي على سكر اللاكتوز الذي تهضمه البكتيريا مفرزة الأحماض التي تسبب حصول فجوات في الأسنان اللبنية، وعندما ينام الرضيع فإن لسانه يحجز آخر رشفة من الحليب ويبقيها في الفم، مما يعني نقع الأسنان بالحليب الغني بسكر اللاكتوز طوال فترة قد تمتد لساعات، وهذا يؤدي إلى حدوث التسوس في جميع الأسنان باستثناء الأسنان السفلية الأمامية، فوضعية اللسان تحميها من الحليب وتشكل أشبه ما يكون بمظلة واقية.
ومنذ اللحظة التي تبزغ فيها الأسنان اللبنية -على عمر ستة أشهر- يصبح الطفل معرضا لتسوس الرضع، وهو أمر يقتضي من الأهل اتباع أنماط صحية في تغذية الطفل والعناية به، ويؤدي الاستمرار بالعادات الخاطئة إلى عواقب وخيمة على صحة الطفل قد ترافقه لباقي عمره.
