As our medical team continues to save lives among refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo through the mobile clinic at the Cishemere site, we are facing serious logistical challenges. The bridge connecting our city to the transit site has been cut off, making access extremely difficult.

Despite these obstacles, our staff—particularly the midwives—remain on the frontlines, showing unwavering commitment and courage. Often working under very harsh conditions, they are making every possible effort to reach the site and ensure continuity of essential health services for women, children, and the most vulnerable.

This is the reality of humanitarian settings: dedication beyond limits, resilience in adversity, and midwives standing firm to protect life and dignity.

As the world celebrates Christmas, our medical team remains by the side of the most vulnerable—caring for refugees from the DRC at the Cishemere site.
Even in times of hardship, compassion does not pause. The Midwife in Action’s Association continues to bring hope by integrating sexual and reproductive health services in humanitarian settings and providing essential primary health care through the mobile clinic, with the support of WHO/ OMS Burundi

This Christmas, we choose solidarity, dignity, and life.
🎄 Merry Christmas to you all.

Yesterday our Association had the honour of participating in the presentation of the State of the World’s Midwifery (SoWMy) 2024 Report, convened by UNFPA Uganda

We extend our sincere appreciation to UNFPA and partners for convening this critical dialogue and for generating evidence that clearly highlights the realities facing the midwifery workforce in Uganda and globally.

One finding from the Uganda survey is particularly striking:

Out of 42,414 midwives registered with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC), only 32% are currently employed in the health sector, yet Uganda is projected to require 346,551 midwives by 2030 to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

This evidence underscores an urgent reality:
• Uganda has qualified and registered midwives ready to serve
• However, over 67% are not absorbed into the health system

This is not merely a workforce numbers issue.
It is a matter of policy choices, financing, workforce absorption, deployment, retention, and political commitment.

The findings strongly reinforce the global call led by the International Confederation of Midwives through the campaign. Scaling up the midwifery workforce is not optional; it is fundamental to achieving UHC, improving maternal and newborn outcomes, and strengthening health system resilience.

As the National Midwives Association of Uganda - NMAU, we reaffirm our commitment to advocacy, partnership, and evidence-informed action to ensure midwives are not only trained, but recruited, supported, and retained where they are most needed.

Midwives are ready.
The evidence is clear.
The time to act is now.

📍 Cishemere Refugee Transit Site – Cibitoke Province

On 19 December 2025, within the OMS Burundi–supported mobile clinic implemented by MAA Burundi support from CAREC made it possible to provide obstetric ultrasound examinations for 25 high-risk pregnant women, among more than 300 pregnant women present at the site.

🤝 This support significantly contributed to the early detection and management of pregnancy-related risks, helping to protect the health of both mothers and unborn babies.
The medical team is doing everything possible to save lives, working tirelessly to ensure that pregnant women and their babies receive timely, life-saving care despite challenging conditions.

Displacement, uncertainty, and crisis make access to respectful, continuous care even more difficult - especially during menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. Midwives are there in these moments, providing compassionate, culturally sensitive, evidence-based care.

On this , we want to emphasise how every person deserves safe, respectful sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and adolescent health care — regardless of where they are from or where they are going.
