🥓With bowel cancer on the rise in those under 50 years old we thought we would share some information that might just help raise awareness of risk factors and what we can do about it.
Some factors, such as genetics increasing our risk we are not able to control, however environmental factors have also been associated with the disease.
These include a sedentary lifestyle, being overweight and obesity, smoking, heavy alcohol use, low-fibre, and high-fat diets or diets high in processed meats.
However, when they say 'high' the portion sizes that increase this risk might surprise you (slide 1).
A simple way to help reduce your risk. even slightly, is to reduce or avoid processed meats. These include:
🌭sausages and hot dogs
🥓bacon
🍖ham
🍕deli meats such as pepperoni, salami and chorizo
🥖pâté
🥫canned meat such as corned beef and Spam
🥪sliced luncheon meats
A common way to eat these foods is as a sandwich, so take a look at some simple swaps to help you find a tasty alternative, at least some days of the week...
