Lamellar Cataract:
▪️This is the commonest type of zonular cataract and second commonest type of infantile or congenital cataract.
▪️Lamellar cataract may be present at birth or it may manifest during early postnatal period.
▪️It consists of concentric zones of lamellar opacities surrounding a core which is clear, or almost so, enveloped by a clear cortex externally.
▪️These concentric zones of maldeveloped fibers result from some prenatal or postnatal noxious factors active for a certain period during the development of the lens.
▪️Heredity plays an active role in formation of lamellar cataract and transmission of autosomal dominant type.
▪️Maternal malnutrition, viral disease like rubella and measles and endocrine disorders like hypoparathyroidism are nonhereditary causes of lamellar cataract.
▪️On examination with undilated pupil, lamellar cataract cannot be distinguished from total congenital cataract.
▪️When the pupil is widely dilated, a central disk shaped opacity is seen in the central part leaving the peripheral part of the lens transparent.
▪️Few concentric rings of opacities alternating with clear zones may be present and radial bow shaped opacities run anteroposteriorly at the periphery of the disk shaped opacity.
▪️Lamellar cataract is almost always bilateral and usually static.
