///// CAN YOU DIE OF A BROKEN HEART? /////
"The American Heart Association (AHA) defines "broken heart syndrome" as a “sudden, intense chest pain — the reaction to a surge of stress hormones — that can be caused by an emotionally stressful event” with established ties between depression, mental health, and heart disease.
When this happens, part of the heart enlarges and doesn’t pump well, but the rest of the heart functions normally. Eventually, all heart function returns to normal." However, in some rare cases, they do not.
Physiologically many things happen to a grieving person's body. Did you know that a mourner is 21 times as likely to have a heart attack than a non-mourning person and usually within the first week following the loss? True fact.
Broken heart syndrome is described as “stress-induced cardiomyopathy, which occurs when, during a moment of extreme stress, the left ventricle of the heart balloons, causing symptoms similar to a heart attack, included chest pain and shortness of breath. More than 90% of patients with broken heart syndrome are women. Most patients recover from the experience, though there are rare cases of death caused by broken heart syndrome." {taken from Healthline News}
As I heard the news this evening about Debbie Reynolds' passing, my mind went first to the possibility of broken heart syndrome. (My thoughts go to the son who has now lost his sister and his mom within 24 hours.)
Debbie Reynolds was at her son's house, planning the funeral for her daughter, Carrie Fisher, when she suffered a stroke. Her last words were that she 'wanted to be with Carrie,' as confirmed by her son. Debbie never recovered and also died.
The day after her daughter died. ___________________________________________________
