Speeding Up Speech Doesn’t Speed Up Brain Processing

Even when speech is sped up or slowed down, the auditory cortex keeps processing sounds on its own fixed timescale, rather than adjusting to the pacing of words or syllables.

This study challenges the idea that brain timing should match speech structure. Instead, it shows that higher-order brain areas interpret meaning on top of a steady stream of timed information.

These findings could help explain why some people struggle with speech comprehension and may improve computational models for language processing.

Illusion-Making Neurons Show How the Brain Constructs Reality

Researchers identified specialized IC-encoder neurons that allow the brain to see illusions by completing patterns not present in visual input.

These neurons receive feedback from higher brain areas, filling in missing contours so the brain perceives shapes like squares or triangles where none exist.

Experiments showed that stimulating these neurons alone could reproduce illusion-related brain activity.

The findings demonstrate that vision is an active construction process, not a passive recording of reality.

Oxytocin Fuels Reciprocity and Empathy

A new study has shown that rats can develop true reciprocal cooperation, not just mutual benefit, by participating in tasks where help must be repaid later.

Unlike simple mutualism, these tasks required animals to remember and return favors, and richer social interaction made them more successful.

Researchers discovered that reciprocity experience also enhanced empathy, with rats showing stronger emotional contagion toward partners.

Importantly, oxytocin signaling in the orbitofrontal cortex was crucial: rats lacking oxytocin were more likely to free-ride and less likely to reciprocate.

These results highlight oxytocin as an internal mechanism for stabilizing cooperation beyond external punishment.

The findings suggest a biological basis for fairness, empathy, and social trust.
