The book of excuses may be long, but you'll never find an excuse good enough to avoid a colonoscopy.

Colore**al cancer is the second most deadly cancer in The Bahamas. The tragedy is that it’s also one of the most preventable cancers when caught early. A colonoscopy can find and remove precancerous polyps before they ever become cancer.

Close the book. Get screened.

Colon and re**al cancers typically will show no signs or symptoms but are preventable when detected early.

Dr. Flloyd Carter is one of the Bahamas' most skilled, and experienced gastroenterologists. Screening procedures like colonoscopies can detect problems and if pre-cancerous polyps are detected, they can usually be removed during the procedure.

Practice prevention by maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and avoiding red & processed meat. Research shows adding a vitamin D or calcium supplement can also help to lower the risk of colore**al cancer, but it's advised to speak with a physician. **alCancerAwarenessMonth

You may already know February is Heart Health Month, but what you may not know is the effect gut health can have on your heart.

The trillions of bacteria in your GI tracts play an important role in cardiovascular health. Seventy percent of the body’s inflammatory cells are actually housed in the gut-associated tissue.

An imbalance in gut health can affect your blood vessels increasing the risk of heart failure, stroke, and plaque buildup in the arteries.

Show your heart some love by keeping your gut health in check. Promote a healthy gut by eating plenty of fiber-rich plant foods, pre and probiotics while avoiding processed foods and excess sugar.

Signs of an unbalanced gut can include constipation, bloating, gas, stomach cramps, acid reflux, and heartburn. If any of these symptoms are interfering with your everyday life, it's time to schedule a consultation with Dr. Carter.

Chron's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease. There is no known cause and it is a lifelong condition that cannot be cured.

Flare-ups are unpredictable and can disrupt daily life. Reduce them by not smoking, eating a healthy and low-fat diet, exercising regularly, and controlling stress.

With proper management, people with Chron's disease can experience a normal life expectancy and good quality of life. Talk to Dr. Carter about the steps you can take to keep your Chron's in check.

Fermented foods decrease inflammation and improve microbiome diversity. Eating fermented foods boosts the number of beneficial bacteria or probiotics in your gut. This has been shown to improve digestion, decrease and prevent inflammation and even benefit mental health.

Probiotics can be found in fermented foods like:
✅ Kimchi- made from fermented cabbage and vegetables
✅ Tempeh- meat substitute made from fermented soybeans
✅ Kombucha- fizzy and flavorful beverage made from fermented tea
✅ Cultured yogurt- yogurt made from fermented milk

Increasing your intake of probiotic foods is as simple as adding probiotic yogurt to your breakfast in the morning, mixing kimchi into rice bowls, or swapping pork bacon for tempeh bacon.

A less diverse microbiome could lead to an imbalance in bacteria and enzymes which causes inflammation. An inflamed gut can cause you to experience unexpected weight loss, an increased urgency to have bowel movements, frequent cramping, or fever.

Get your gut health on track. Make an appointment with Dr. Carter today.

Muscular contractions of the stomach walls mix chewed food, water, hydrochloric acid, and various digestive enzymes into a thick liquid known as chyme.

Depending on the size of your meal, the stomach will digest the food into chyme in anywhere between 40 minutes to 3 hours.

Once the right consistency has been reached, chyme is passed into the small intestine where it can be digested futher and absorbed into the bloodstream.

If your stomach is unable to produce the enzymes it needs to digest certain foods or is unable to mix the food you eat with the enzymes and acid produced by your stomach, malabsorption can occur.

The inability to absorb fats, protein, sugars or certain vitamins is common among those with Chron's disease, damage to the intestines, prolonged use of antibiotics, or lactose intolerance.

Fatigue, soft and fatty stools, diarrhea, anemia, fatigue, and bloating can be signs of malabsorption. Schedule a consultation if you frequently experience these symptoms.
