The Salus Project

The Salus Project The Salus Project combines the values of Health and Wellness with Art and Beauty. Salus means wellness.

The Salus Project is an art initiative that aims to highlight various aspects of wellness. Founded by Dr. Cates and his wife, Nurse Anita Cates, the Salus Project was created for artists to express themselves in all five areas of wellness: spiritual, financial, physical, emotional and social. Several times a year Dr Cates and Nurse Anita Cates devise and curate art shows based on different dimensions of Wellness and Health and they encourage young artists to participate. The project was founded in summer 2011, out of a desire to provide a bridge between art/beauty and health/wellness. The Salus Project invites artists to create art to increase awareness and positive changes in the artist and the wider community. The Salus Project has collaborated with several organizations and on many projects to highlight five dimensions of wellness, heart health, HIV/AIDS and diabetes.

“These initiatives are all interconnected to our core values of health and wellness,” said Dr. Cates. “We want to provide as many different opportunities for The Bahamas to become aware of and engage in meaningful conversation that will result in positive behavioral changes of a healthy Bahamas.”

The Salus Project would like to thank everyone that attended the opening night of "The Evolution of the Arc" open call exhibition, and the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas - - for being a wonderful host and for their continued support.

Most of all congratulations and thank you to the amazingly talented artists that submitted and were selected.

Thank you all!!!

Don't forget to check out the exhibition, which is up until Jan. 23rd 2021!

“Evolution of the Arc” is an Open Call Exhibition, a partnership between The Salus Project and the NAGB. With the shared goal of welcoming the wider artistic community into the museum for conversation and exchange, we invite proposals that seek to inspire, critique, uplift and offer space for contemplation and representation. This Arc, which offers reference to our archipelago, is our chance to consider the past and present, and build out ideas for a new future with healing in mind.

Brain research shows the arts promote mental health

Our attraction to the arts may be driven by an innate desire to use our brains in ways that make us feel good.

The link between the arts and health and well-being goes back many years. ... Participating in the arts can also help with depression, increase positive emotions and, in some cases, even improve immune system functioning. And, if you create art within a group setting, you can form supportive relationships and friendships.
