What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
Autism Spectrum Disorder, more commonly known as autism, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the way an individual communicates, interacts with others, and interprets sensory input. Autism is considered a spectrum disorder because every person has different symptoms and strengths, along with weaknesses. Some of the common characteristics are:
Communication difficulties: Inability to verbally and non-verbally communicate.
Repetitive behaviors: Having specific routines or actions.
Sensory sensitivities: increased or decreased sensitivity to sensory input such as light, sound, or touch.
Understanding autism is crucial to fostering empathy and creating supportive environments for individuals on the spectrum.
The Significance of World Autism Awareness Day 2nd April 2025
The United Nations General Assembly established World Autism Awareness Day in 2007 to:
• Increase awareness about autism among the general public.
• Promote acceptance and inclusion of individuals with autism.
• Advocate for early diagnosis and intervention to enhance quality of life.
• Encourage governments and organizations to implement policies that support neurodiverse individuals.
This day also coincides with the general world Autism Awareness day 2nd April 2025 Month, celebrated in April, thereby increasing its effect.
