MEDICATION ADHERENCE

TAKING YOUR MEDICATIONS DURING THE WINTER BREAK

As we come to the end of the semester, and for people who are on prescription medications; remember to take your medications as recommended by your healthcare professional.

WHY DO WE NEED TO TAKE MEDICATION?

• To cure a disease, for example: infections such as sore throat.
• To manage a disease condition and avoid progression of the
disease or its complications, e.g asthma, hypertension (high
blood pressure), HIV/AIDS.
• To prevent diseases, e.g vaccines, anti-epileptics for epilepsy.

IMPORTANCE OF MEDICATION ADHERENCE

• The degree to which you take your medications as
recommended by your healthcare professional will determine
if the prescribed treatment will be successful or not.

Patients who take their medications as recommended:

(i) Achieve cure for their acute conditions (e.g sore throat)
(ii) Achieve improvements in their medical conditions
(iii) Have an overall improved quality of life.
(iv) Are able to adequately manage their chronic medical
conditions such as asthma or hypertension (high blood
pressure) with low chances of complications

• Complications of disease can lead to frequent work or school
absenteeism or hospitalizations

LET US TALK ABOUT “MORNING AFTER PILL”
Emergency contraception (also known as post-coital contraception or the morning-after pill) describes the use of medication or devices as an emergency measure to prevent pregnancy. Levonorgestrel-only emergency contraceptive pills (LNG ECPs) are a type of emergency contraceptives that act by preventing or delaying an o**m (egg) from being released from the o***y when taken before ovulation. LNG ECPs are also thought to possibly prevent the s***m and egg from meeting by changing the nature of the cervical mucus or the ability of the s***m to bind to the egg. Emergency contraception (EC) is not abortifacient and it is only effective in the first 72 hours following in*******se. Emergency contraception cannot interrupt an established pregnancy or harm a developing embryo. It is not a solution to family planning therefore, it is advisable to use other family planning or contraceptive methods that are more reliable. Visit UB Clinic for more information.
