OSTEOPOROSIS
As the name implies, Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become fragile and at risk of breakage. In the development of bones, there is the formation of an initial modelled in the shape of the intended bone. This frame is then filled in with calcium in a process known as ossification. The calcium in bone is then recycled throughout life, with some calcium being added and some taken out all the time and at different rates. If for some reason more calcium is lost than gained, osteoporosis can result.
There are several conditions that can increase the risk of Osteoporosis including; being a woman, ageing, family history of fractures, smoking, reduced mobility or a sedentary life-style, excessive alcohol, limited exposure to sunlight, as well as a long list of medical conditions.
Osteoporosis is usually more common in women than in men, especially after menopause and this is why women are usually given calcium supplements at that point.
Research also suggests that the best thing is to build your bone calcium stores early in life, preferable in your twenties and thirties for ladies. This is because the maximum bone mass is attained between the age of 20 and 30. This can be done through a more active lifestyle, exercising and anything that puts more demand on the skeleton including activities like strength training with weights, yoga, pilates, but honestly any kind of increased physical activity will do. A balanced diet and well as calcium supplements can be considered. Sunlight plays a crucial role in the metabolism of vitamin D and calcium, so get as much safe sun exposure as you can. Take a walk or go for a run in the morning. Better yet, sit out in the balcony and enjoy your morning coffee.
You don’t have to end up with bone issues in later life. Get ahead of it.
Just thought you should know.
