Today's message:

Why parents with a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are often in denial:

Shock and fear: Receiving or suspecting an ASD diagnosis can feel overwhelming. Parents may fear what the diagnosis means for their child’s future.

Guilt and self-blame: Some parents wonder if they did something wrong, leading them to deny the possibility to avoid these feelings.

Hope they will “grow out of it”: Some parents believe the child will eventually “catch up,” delaying acceptance.

Cultural and societal stigma: In many communities, there is stigma around autism, making parents fear judgment or exclusion.

Comparisons with other children: Parents may see their child doing some things “normally,” making it harder to accept the areas of delay.

Why parents should not remain in denial:

✅ Early intervention changes outcomes. Accepting the diagnosis allows the child to receive therapies that improve speech, social skills, and independence.
✅ The child needs your support. Acknowledging the reality allows you to understand and support your child’s unique needs without frustration or unrealistic expectations.
✅ Denial delays help. Time lost due to denial is time that could have been used to build skills during the brain’s most flexible period.
✅ Reduces stress long-term. Acceptance helps parents adjust expectations, build realistic plans, and find community support, reducing emotional strain.
✅ It’s not your fault. Autism is not caused by parenting. Denial does not protect the child, but action does.

In simple terms:

> Denial may feel like protection, but it only delays help. Acceptance is not giving up; it is equipping your child to thrive with the support they need.
