BNOC Hosts Japan-Africa Baseball and Softball Foundation (J-ABS) Delegation
The Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) today hosted a delegation from the Japan-Africa Baseball and Softball Foundation (J-ABS), who are currently in Botswana to deliver the Baseballership Education Program 2026 in collaboration with the Botswana Softball Association (BSA).
The delegation was received by BNOC President Mr. Tshepo Sitale, together with Members of the BNOC Board, in a meeting that highlighted the importance of international collaboration in advancing sport development and youth empowerment.
The programme features two key components:
๐น Baseballership Education Seminar (Basic Course) โ targeting approximately 40 baseball/softball coaches and school teachers.
๐น Baseball Clinic โ designed for children aged 10โ15 years.
The seminar is facilitated by Mr. Shinya Tomonari, President of J-ABS and former Head Coach of the Ghana, Tanzania, and South Sudan National Teams. With over 30 years of coaching experience in Africa, Mr. Tomonari shared insights into Japanese-style coaching, which emphasizes discipline, respect, integrity, and character development alongside technical excellence.
The clinic is led by Mr. Shun Tono, former professional pitcher for the prestigious Tokyo Yomiuri Giants and current Giants Academy Coach. Mr. Tono is introducing young athletes to elite training methods aimed at nurturing talent and promoting long-term development.
J-ABS, a Japanese NGO operating in 12 African countries, is dedicated to youth development through baseball and softball. The collaboration comes at a significant time, as baseball and softball are set to return as official sports at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
This engagement reflects BNOCโs ongoing commitment to strengthening international partnerships and supporting the growth of sport in Botswana through knowledge exchange and capacity building.
