At age 7, I can clearly remember the beautiful island of Caye Caulker. My dad was a tour guide at the time and my mom a restaurant cook. If this crisis would have caught us at that age we would have been touched deeply by it.
At age 10, I was in Punta Gorda, my mother on a daily basis would bake bread and bun which I would sell for us to eat. The gentleman my mother lived with worked at the British Army base that was located about four miles out of town. I can imagine that his salary would partially sustain the family if the pandemic occurred during that time.
From first form until a couple years ago my mother had her own business in Dangriga and in Belize City. Again we would have been impacted by the pandemic. During my university years, I was able to work with an excellent human being and overall great soul Wayne Miller at the Sandbox on Caye Caulker. One of the greatest lessons of many that I learnt was with power and influence, there is the need for humility, with financial resources you bring others up and with leadership you help to change lives for the better.
My parting shot, don’t be judgemental earlier in your life you could have been in the same or worse situation. Remember where you came from, some may have sacrificed in order for you to achieve, don’t take that for granted.

In the crisis of COVID-19, there is already a big financial crisis that will hit most Belizean households and the ordinary stresses of life will be exacerbated. As we experience this biological pandemic, there are some persons who are suffering silently mental health crisis within their households. For some Belizeans, this is the first post 1981 state of emergency, that they will remember where they have been on lock down for an extended period of time. It is the first time that public servants have had to wait six days for their salaries and teachers might have to wait until the end of the month to get their salaries.
One of the greatest everyday stressor of life is change, some people adapt and are able to confront change very easily, while others do not. Life for us in Belize has changed in the last month. Some are still adapting to the change. Parents have become teachers, working mothers and fathers are at home. For some families the partner relationship has not been a healthy one coupled with the dynamics of the shut down, it will lend for greater difficulty in the household.
Another stressor is the loss of a job, this in itself is self explanatory but allow me to add what happens when some loses his/her job and there is the loss of purpose?? Some people use their jobs as outlets so as not to be in close proximity with their partner. This pandemic has allowed for them to be in greater proximity and some relationship will get more toxic.
I want to leave you with the following:
1. Do a wellness check on some of your colleagues, video chat and see what happening, share uplifting experiences
2. Ask how they are feeling, most times people will tell you what they are doing, get to know what they are feeling during this time.
3. Some people don’t know how to cook, do a virtual cook out, let them organize the ingredients and virtually you can cook together.
4. Do a virtual karaoke, scrabble or monopoly.

In 2000, I went to Cuba to study psychology because of the ills I saw in the classroom. From 2008, I have worked with families with children with emotional behavioral disorder, trying to help their world be a better place. Over the years I have advocated that there be more TRAINED personnel in the area as there is a serious lacking especially for our marginalized children. No action from anyone!! We just continue to talk. I have sharpened my skills over the years by working at my craft. When young professionals return from their studies they reach out and I give them candid advice about the psychological profession that we are in. I stay in my lane and people come to seek me out, I lead by my example. There is a lot of work to be done in mental health and disabilities!! What have you done lately?? Complain?? My work speaks for itself.
