Nutrition Tip for this

Glycemic Index can be an effective way to control blood sugar levels.

Glycemic index (GI) is a rating system for foods containing carbohydrates, ranking them on a scale of 0 to 100 based on how quickly they raise blood sugar levels after being eaten.
Low to Medium Glycemic Index fruits are: apple, pears, canteloupe, papaya, orange, and berries.
Attached is a picture of fruits with low to medium glycemic index.
Other suitable foods with low to medium glycemic index include: all vegetables, beans, nuts, brown rice, wheat bread, eggs, meats, sweet potato.

Today is being celebrated as World Diabetes Day. This is a day set aside to create awareness about the impact of Diabetes and how to prevent and manage this disease.
The theme for World Diabetes Day is 'Diabetes and well-being'. In 2025, the campaign focuses on highlighting the impact of Diabetes in the workplace.

Today at MOHW HQ, staff were offered blood sugar checks along with a healthy breaskfast.

We continue to engage in wellness efforts around the country encouraging testing and providing advocacy for preventative measures.

Tips include:
✅️Avoid foods high in sugar, salt and fat
✅️Drink more water each day
✅️Consume more fiber in meals( fruits and vegetables)
✅️Eat small portions of foods
✅️Try to do phsyical actvity at least 30- 40 minutes each day.

PCV 13 Vaccine for Children and Adults Introduced

Belmopan, November 12, 2025.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness announces the introduction of Pneumococcal 13 (PCV13) Vaccine for children and adults.

Anyone can get Pneumococcal disease, but it is preventable with one single dose of Pneumococcal vaccine administered from 5 years of age and older. Persons with existing medical conditions and adults 65 years or older are at the highest risk.

The vaccine is a vital step to prevent illness caused by Pneumococcal bacteria that can be transmitted through direct person-to-person contact, which is also one of the most common causes of pneumonia, ear and sinus infections, meningitis (inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord), and bacteremia (Infection of the blood).

The vaccine is available at all public health centers and through the Ministry’s mobile clinics.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness in partnership with UNICEF Belize and with funding support from the Government of Korea conducted a second training for the Water and Sanitation for Health Facility Improvement Tool (WASH FIT) that ended today in Belize city. The objective of the training is to provide technical guidance that can be implemented for quality improvement steps in their health respective facilities.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness, under the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Cooperation Project BZE6004 – “Enhancing Radiation Safety and Quality Assurance for Improved Diagnostic Imaging Services”, received the support of an international expert to conduct quality control (QC) assessments related to radiation exposure in three (3) health facilities: Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital ,Western Regional Hospital, and Southern Health Region,SRH .

This cooperation, held on November 3 – 6, 2005, facilitated the quality control testing on radiation-emitting equipment; evaluated staff exposure and workplace safety; and promoted staff awareness on radiation protection and the need for an up-to-date contingency plan for radiation-related incidents.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness extends its heartfelt gratitude to the IAEA for the continuous support in radiation protection and safety initiatives in Belize.
