Many lab ranges flag anemia only when it's severe. But symptoms often start well before your ferritin drops into the "danger" zone. At Upstream Health, we treat iron deficiency in anyone with ferritin under 100 who is symptomatic.

What’s the difference between iron deficiency and anemia?

Iron Deficiency:
This means your body doesn’t have enough iron, a mineral essential for many bodily functions, especially for making hemoglobin (the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen). You can have iron deficiency without anemia. Early signs might include fatigue, hair loss, restless legs, poor concentration, or feeling cold.

Anemia:
Anemia refers to having too few healthy red blood cells or too little hemoglobin in the blood — regardless of the cause. One of the most common types is iron-deficiency anemia, which happens when iron deficiency becomes severe enough to reduce red blood cell production.

We treat iron deficiency before it progresses, so you don’t have to wait until you’re in crisis to feel better. DM or email for more info or to book a consult!

For many people, taking oral iron is an exhausting, frustrating cycle. You take it, feel sick, try to stick with it—and months later, you’re still tired, foggy, and told to “keep going.” But the truth is: if oral iron hasn’t raised your hemoglobin by 10 mmol/L after 2 weeks, it likely won’t—no matter how long you keep taking it.

Iron infusions aren’t just an alternative. They are significantly more effective and better tolerated:

• Hemoglobin improves in 5x more people given IV iron compared to oral.

• Ferritin levels rise 15x more with IV iron.

• Side effects are less common and much milder.

We’ve accepted suboptimal treatment for too long. It’s time to offer people—especially women—what actually works. Iron infusions are faster, safer, and often more cost-effective in the long run.

If you’ve been struggling with iron deficiency, it may be time to stop taking pills and start reclaiming your energy. Book a free phone consult today!

Iron infusions are safe, fast, and life-changing—but if you’ve never had one, you might not know what to expect.

Here’s what your visit will look like at our clinic:

1. You’ll have a phone call with our nurse for a brief assessment and review of your labs or symptoms.

2. You’ll come for the infusion and relax in a comfortable chair while the iron is slowly infused through an IV (over 60–90 minutes).

3. You can read, listen to music, or even nap during the infusion.

4. Most clients feel better within days, but it can take up to 4 weeks for symptom relief—more energy, less brain fog, better sleep.

5. Have your iron levels checked again after 4-6 weeks.

Side effects are rare and typically mild. Today’s iron formulations are much safer than those used decades ago, with serious reactions occurring in fewer than 1 in 400,000 infusions.

At Upstream Health, we believe you deserve access to care that actually makes you feel better. If you’re ready to explore whether iron infusions are right for you, we’re here to help.

Pregnancy is demanding enough—your iron care shouldn’t be.

We’re now offering Monoferric infusioms during pregnancy, an iron infusion that allows us to fully replenish your iron stores in just one appointment.

In the past, we used Venofer, which required multiple visits over several weeks. Effective, yes—but not always convenient, especially when you're navigating pregnancy, work, family, and fatigue.

With Monoferric, you get:
• A full dose in a single visit
• Shorter infusion times
• Covered by most drug plans
• Proven safe and effective in pregnancy

This means less time in the clinic, and more time feeling well, supported, and energized for what’s ahead.

We’re proud to bring the most up-to-date, evidence-based iron care to our community. If you’re struggling with iron deficiency in pregnancy, let’s talk about whether Monoferric is right for you.
