Winter marks the start of Flu Season. Our residents are a high risk population for contracting the flu, and so we encourage everyone to practice infection control.

Influenza spreads easily. Help control the spread of disease by covering your face when coughing or sneezing, washing your hands, and isolating when sick. Consider talking to your pharmacist about this year’s influenza vaccine.

If you are experiencing symptoms of influenza, stay home, rest, and drink plenty of fluids. If any symptoms worsen, seek medical care.

Be ready to turn your clocks back an hour, because Daylight Savings ends today! Please adjust your clocks accordingly. This change means there will be more light in the morning and less light in the evening. Ensure you have adjusted your schedule to account for this time change and enjoy the extra hour of sleep!

October 29th is World Stroke Day, a day meant to raise awareness around stroke recognition and prevention. Strokes are a leading cause of adult disability and half of all stroke survivors in Canada living with stroke need some help with daily activities such as eating, moving, and going to the washroom.

If you believe someone may be experiencing a stroke, remember to BE FAST:
B – Balance: Is the person suddenly having trouble with balance or coordination?
E – Eyes: Is the person experiencing sudden vision changes such as blurred, or loss of double vision?
F - Face Drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.
A- Arm Weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S - Speech Difficulty: Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak or hard to understand?
T - Time is critical: If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get them to the hospital immediately.

Some uncommon signs of stroke are not included in BE FAST. For instance, women often experience more subtle signs of stroke (e.g., chest pain, fatigue, numbness of left arm), putting them at higher risk. Happy National Seniors Day! We’re proud to be one of B.C.’s largest campuses of care, with over 700 seniors calling Menno Place home. It is a blessing to spend each day with the elders of our community, learning, sharing and laughing together.

On September 30th, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Menno Place remembers and recognizes that there are those who live, work and serve on our campus who have been directly or indirectly affected by the legacy of the Indian Residential School system. On this day each year, invited guests come to Menno Place to share their stories and experiences to help us remember and grow in our understanding.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is also known as Orange Shirt Day, and we encourage everyone to wear orange in recognition of the tragic and ongoing impact of Canada’s residential schools on Indigenous communities. By wearing an orange shirt on this day, we remember, honour and mourn the lives of children who never returned home.

We value this opportunity to reflect, learn, and seek healing together as a nation and on our campus-of-care.

Are you looking for resources to help you grow in your own understanding of how the Indian Residential School system impacted Indigenous Peoples? If you’re not sure where to begin, here are 6 steps to guide your journey:

Menno Place hosted Bridget Finley, MCC BC Indigenous Neighbours Coordinator who gave a presentation for all residents, families and staff to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Bridget spoke with us about what Jesus taught us about what it means to be a good neighbour in Matthew 22:39, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Bridget reminded us that the best way to understand and love our neighbors is to spend time with them, listening to who they are, where they have been and how they experience life. She reminded us that, “We tell our stories until we are healed.”
