It was a busy time of year to tackle a course but I did complete it!

Initial management of concussion:

24-48 hours cognitive and physical rest until the acute symptoms resolve.
Then a gradual reintroduction of cognitive and physical activity at a sub-symptom threshold level.

2016 International Consensus statement on Concussion established both Return-to-School and Return-to-Sport strategies to help guide the process.

Have you heard of the Concussion Recognition Tool 5.....?

It is a tool that non-medical professionals can use to recognize when a concussion might have occurred.

So parents can use at home, teachers/administrators can use in schools, and of course coaches/managers/officials can utilize it in many sporting environments.

Because it is important to RECOGNIZE a potential concussion and REMOVE the person from the situation/game/practice and get medical attention and/or further evaluation.

Answer to concussion question #2: FALSE

While signs of concussion (those characteristics that can be observed by people other than the athlete) and symptoms (experienced and reported by the athlete him or herself) are often present or observable at the time of injury, they may not appear until several hours or even days or weeks later. In fact, delayed onset of signs and symptoms is more likely in younger athletes. Athletes, parents and other caregivers thus need to be alert to the occurrence of such delayed signs or symptoms or deteriorating mental status, which may signal the presence of a serious, life-threatening brain injury, such as subdural hematomas (bleeding on the brain).
